Eight men in a Scottish paedophile ring have been found guilty of a series of "horrific" sex offences against children and babies.

The men were convicted of a catalogue of child pornography and abuse charges, including the sexual assault of a three-month-old boy.

The High Court in Edinburgh was told that at least one of the men had an HIV infection and that the victims were shared around.

Two of the men - convicted sex offender Neil Strachan and gay rights campaigner James Rennie - were convicted of sex attacks on children.

Strachan, 41, and Rennie, 38, both from Edinburgh, were also found guilty of conspiring to abuse youngsters, as were three other members of the gang.

And all eight accused in the 10-week trial at the High Court in Edinburgh were convicted of a series of child porn offences.

The gang members were traced through their explicit internet chats about sexual fantasies involving children.

Nearly 125,000 indecent images were seized during Operation Algebra, which uncovered the group, believed to be Scotland's biggest paedophile network.

Ross Webber, 27, of North Berwick, Craig Boath, 24, from Dundee and John Milligan, 40, from Glasgow, were all found guilty of conspiring to participate in the sexual abuse of children along with Strachan and Rennie.

The five men, with Colin Slaven, 23, from Edinburgh and Neil Campbell, 46 and John Murphy, 44, from Glasgow, were also convicted of a catalogue of child porn offences.

The jury took 10 hours over two days to reach its verdicts.

From various locations across Scotland, they plotted, whether by using web cameras or other means such as by phone, to participate in sexual offences including rape.

For over 15 years James Rennie seemed the closest of family friends and it is hard to put into words the extent of the betrayal he has exacted upon us, as many of the details may identify our family and son.

Campbell was also accused of conspiracy, but he was cleared on that charge after the jury found the case against not proven.

Strachan and Rennie faced charges of actually abusing three young victims in this case.

Strachan was convicted of attempting to rape an 18-month-old boy in Edinburgh on New Year's Eve in 2005.

The attack was captured in a photograph known in court as The Hogmanay Image.

Strachan was also found guilty of repeatedly touching a six-year-old boy indecently on the same night while he was asleep.

The jury found Rennie, the former chief of LGBT Youth Scotland, an organisation dedicated to helping young gay people, guilty of molesting a young boy over more than four years.

The child was just three months old when the abuse began.

Rennie was also found guilty of two charges of attempting to defeat the ends of justice by accessing insecure internet connections.

The men were all convicted of a string of child pornography offences. All eight were convicted of possessing and making indecent images and seven of them were found to have distributed images.

A charge of distribution against Slaven was withdrawn by the Crown.

All the offences were committed in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and East Lothian between February 2004 to May 2008.

The mother of an 18-month-old boy abused by Strachan said today she would never be able to forgive him for the "sick" attacks on her son.

She said in a statement: "The anguish I feel towards Mr Strachan is indescribable.

"I feel that no matter what punishment given to Mr Strachan it will never be able to compensate for the hurt, devastation and great deal of stress brought to me and my family."

The family of the baby abused by Rennie said their life had been "turned upside down" since they discovered the close family friend had targeted their son.

"For a year and four months now we have had to live with the impact and haunting consequences this has had on our lives.

"For over 15 years James Rennie seemed the closest of family friends and it is hard to put into words the extent of the betrayal he has exacted upon us, as many of the details may identify our family and son."

On the surface, Neil Strachan and James Rennie held down good jobs and were trusted members of the community.

But the pair, both from Edinburgh, had a shared interest in young boys and had collected some of the worst child abuse images ever seen by police experts.

They were also responsible for the abuse of very young children - one as young as three months old.

Strachan, 41, also hid a dark past, in which he was jailed for three years for molesting a young boy.

Rennie, 38, was the successful chief executive ofLGBT Youth Scotland, an organisation dedicated to helping young gay people.

A former secondary school teacher, he regularly spoke out in public on gay issues, particularly how they affected young people.

But the High Court in Edinburgh heard he was "polluted by deviant compulsion".

Crown QC Dorothy Bain said: "In reality he is someone who allowed his profound interest in the sexual abuse of children to engulf his entire life."

The extent of his obsession with under-age sex unfolded as the 10-week trial progressed.

He was charged and ultimately convicted of molesting a child over a number of years, starting at the age of three months.

And in an online conversation with another accused, he even expressed a wish to see children with Down's Syndrome or a learning disability sexually abused.

Operation Algebra officers found that Rennie had links with paedophiles in the US and the Netherlands.

Gang preyed on youngsters

Rennie was traced and arrested by police at the end of 2007.

He was suspended from his high-profile post and by February 2008 had resigned.

Strachan was the man who sparked Operation Algebra when indecent images were found on computer equipment used by him in his work.

Tests revealed "sinister" emails between him and Rennie.

They had encountered each other online in 2004 when Strachan congratulated Rennie on the content of his web page on a site known to have been misused by paedophiles.

When the case came to trial, what the jury did not know was that Strachan had offended before.

He was jailed for three years in 1997 for repeatedly molesting a young boy while he was an official at a youth football club.

He started abusing the child when he was five years old and the abuse went on for two years.

Strachan quit his post as secretary of Celtic East Boys Club in Edinburgh after he was caught.

When he was jailed, it emerged that he had also been convicted of a similar sex offence 12 years previously.

Among the charges faced by Strachan in the current trial was an allegation that he committed a serious sexual offence against a toddler at New Year from 2005 into 2006.

But Strachan, despite being one of the worst offenders in the group, was the only one of the eight men on trial who denied every charge against him.

Prosecutors were forced to piece together the case against him bit by bit.

Crucial to their case was a photograph partially showing a man sexually assaulting a young child.

The Crown called on a world-renowned expert in human anatomy to examine the picture, known in court as The Hogmanay Image.

Pinpointing the abuser's physical traits, including a distinctive thumbnail, Professor Susan Black said there was "strong evidence" that Strachan and the man in the picture were the same person.

Having been previously jailed and released for 'repeatedly molesting a young boy while he was an official at a youth football club' it goes to show how ineffective the western (PC) legal system is at dealing with such cases.

Those with desires and instints to sexually abuse childern aren't 'cured' by what western courts sentence them to.

unfortunately most societies don't allow animals like this to be appropriately punished. sure jail is no picnic but somehow that doesn't seem like enough of a punishment IMO. pedos and rapists get their due in prison but in many cases i would bet they get put into protective custody.
although, if memory serves, an inmate did eventually get to jeffrey dahmer and beat him to death with a broom handle

Yup, shouldn't just be about punishment IMO. At the end of their punishment the priority should be placed on protecting possible future victims.

Their crime is based on their needs, the motive is pleasure, if someone murders 'for pleasure' they never see the light of day again, if most other crimes are commited for pleasure their sentences will be vastly increased than if they were commited for other reasons (drug money etc.)

Yet they receive 2 or 3 years and are set free to continue raping infants for their own pleasure.

Bring back lynching I reckon, and I don't mean the hangmans drop, I mean put a rope around their necks and pull them up slowly, watch them throttle to death.

It would be unhuman behaviour.

Put them in a cell with 3 meals a day and a TV for a few years then release them.

There is no cure for their mental flaws, and prison will not do it so the only thing is life in prison or Lethal injection, I for one can not see a life in prison with no hope of return to society, castration will not do it as it is mental and no amount of psychiatric treatment will ever do any good, so it seems we are back to lethal injection. or firing squad, I would like to volunteer for that duty.

No surprise to see a Celtic connection there.

I had to switch that off half way through, it wasn't pleasant viewing.

I did notice that one of the inmates who had previously been a serial offender had voluntarily been castrated, so that he could be released back into the community without posing a threat, as he couldn't trust himself otherwise.

Maybe that really should be the minimum requirement for letting any of these nefarious beasts out.
