Sea Shepherd ready to clash with Japanese whalers

Sea Shepherd ready to clash with Japanese whalers

The Australian Government is calling for restraint as Japanese whalers and protesters prepare for a confrontation in the Southern Ocean.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an anti-whaling group that call themselves the pirates of the sea, are not afraid of meeting the Japanese coast guard in Antarctica.

Environmental groups are expecting the Japanese will send a coast guard ship to protect the whaling fleet from protesters this summer.

But Greenpeace has decided not to send its protest ships down to Antarctica this time.
Sea Shepherd activists have rammed Japanese whaling ships, thrown butyric acid onto their decks and even jumped on board.

Then last summer, Sea Shepherd founder Captain Paul Watson, says someone aboard a Japanese whaling ship shot him.

Mr Watson has a video of a bullet lodged in his bullet-proof vest, but the Japanese whalers say no-one took a shot at the activist.

Last summer, Japan sent coast guard officers down on its whaling ships. This year Greenpeace believes the Japanese will be sending a coast guard ship to protect its whaling fleet.

Steve Shallhorn is the chief executive of Greenpeace Australia-Pacific.

"It was reported in a Japan fisheries magazine some weeks ago that the equivalent of $8 million has been allocated to the Japanese coast guard to protect the fleet," he said.
"So, we made the assumption that that amount of money will be used to send a vessel down there."

Japan will not say if it is sending the coast guard down to Antarctica, but Sea Shepherd will sail out of Brisbane next month for what it calls an aggressive but non-violent confrontation with the Japanese whaling fleet.

Mr Watson says he is also ready to confront the Japanese coast guard.
"We're concerned of course. But I don't care if they send the whole Japanese Navy down there; we're not going to be intimidated from going down there. We have no intention of retreating from them," he said.
"We've cost them their profits for last three years and we're going to continue to do that. We've had over the last 30 years a lot of confrontations, including confrontations with the Soviet and Norwegian Navies, who've fired on us. So, I'm not too concerned about them."

    Greenpeace backs out

As the Sea Shepherd society prepares for an escalation with the Japanese, Mr Shallhorn has announced Greenpeace will not be going back down to Antarctica this summer.
"Greenpeace has been down in the Southern Ocean for the past three years, so we've taken the decision over the last couple of weeks that really what we need to do is focus on the campaign inside Japan," he said.
"It's only because there's not enough opposition inside Japan that the fleet goes down to the Southern Ocean every year. And that's where we believe the decisive battle is going to be fought."

Mr Watson says Greenpeace have scared off the Japanese coast guard.
"Shame on them. I mean, they've been collecting money for the last 10 months to go down there and that's millions of dollars they've collected," he said.
"You know, we're not even able to come to close to fundraising at that scale, and they're not going down. Of course, the announcement coincided with the announcement by Japan they're going to send a gun boat. So, maybe they're frightened; I don't know."

But Mr Shallhorn disagrees. He thinks the Sea Shepherd society is taking a risk.
"I think any time you do a direct action at sea is a certain amount of risk, that's obvious," he said.

With all this talk of risky behaviour, the Government wants both the Japanese and the activists to act with restraint.

A spokesman from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says Japan will not be breaking the law if it sends the coast guard down to Antarctica.

But the Australian Government still has not found out if the coast guard is going to be protecting the Japanese whaling fleet.

I'm suspiscious of Greenpeace and the SSS. Greenpeace, whom have gathered a reputation of this and that, tend to practice and are saturated in the same issues that they disapprove and disavow. Very common practice for these contemporary "green" groups that call on activism at every level. But don't live nor practice their dogma....

    like most ...........

point is that they are wasting a resource out of pure bloody mindedness , it's more about showing the local yokels that they are the masters and can thumb their noses at the west than actually feeding the population.

Au. and NZ do the same with sheep and beef, as well as the USA, so what do you think freezers are for?

    Where are you from??
The use of freezers is not for the food you are eating, They are for the food that you store ahead during good times so you have something to eat during the lean times.
Ya know in Alaska we used to shoot a couple of moose, a couple of Cariboo when it was getting cold so they would freeze for our use during winter, and smoke up a bunch of salmon for later use because that way they are better eating than frozen, and dry a hell of a bunch of em for us and the the dogs to eat during winter, you do not go to the store on a 2 times daily like a Thai and only have in your larder what you will eat today, You go shopping once a year and store the stuff you don't eat today.

^ My experience tells me otherwise.

Why is nobody up in arms over the Norwegians who have told the Intl Whaling Commission to go fcuk themselves, they'll take as much as they want ... ?

The Japs catch a few (dozen) and everyone's shitting all over themselves.

A tempest in a teapot if you ask me. Only a matter of time before the Greenpiece (intended) idiots do something really stupid.

Why, you ask Tex? Because the Norwegians are European {the good race} and the Japanese are...err..."them", you know - the Yellow Peril? Greenfreak, which is Eurocentrically based tends to overlooked what the developed and good civilizations do. This is usually the SOP with all those other "human rights" outfits that never see the worst in the West.

If Watson come to Norway, he possibly wonīt be able to leave the country alive! MED, it was the whale meat that feed the Norwegian people after the 2nd WW. It has nothing to do with that we are "the good race" We are only 4.5mill. so if killing a few whales was such a crime, I think the EU or the world would se it end. But remember, this is not "Mooby Dick" or what the fairy-tale whale is called, itīs FOOD!!

You're not getting it. The original question was inquiring about why the feel-good orgs such as Greenpeace do not pursue the Norwegian and Russian whaling slaughter as intensely {or at all} or scrutinize the same as they chase the Japanese.

You don't read the Norwegian newspaper do you? This organizations are in the Norwegian waters when the season starts. They have try to sink one boat not so long ago.
Let me ask you one thing; why donīt Greenpeace go to the Gulf of Mexico and protest against all the oil and air pollution that is going on there, killing birds and fish. I know how bad this is, I am working there. Do you know why? The American oil companys pays a lot of bribe to Greenpeace every year!
One whale can feed one big village in for instance in Sudan!
The Americans are the one that kills most whales!
so please, donīt tell other people what to eat!

I've suggested nothing of the sort. Are you on medication?

I'm merely curious why Japan gets so much attention, for a relatively small haul and little is mentioned or written about Norwegia.

In your European world, it gets a lot of attention. Eurocentric-based info and stimulation. Wonder if it's getting much attention in Japan? Or Pakistan? or Madagascar? They invented what should be important to you. They also manufacture you're general stimulation. KAPEESH!?! You're only conscious about such things because they want it that way. You really can't figure out why Greenpeace doesn't pursue or report the same sorid whaling practice that takes place by Norwegians...?? And then the kin-like press that maintains a similiar promotion?? You wonder if I'm on medication? I wonder if you are that thick.

I'm merely curious why Japan gets so much attention
because it's nothing but commercial whaling carried out under the guise of scientific research , in plain words ,

    they are lying .

I've eaten it three times. It's not so delicious. I don't think many people like it. I don't know why it's still whaled, but one reason is tradition. Other countries don't have a right to say Japan can't hunt them.

When I was little I had it a lot in school. My mother never cooked it when I was young, so it's just not something I would think of eating. Maybe she didn't like it, but also it's hard to find in stores.

I've never had it, but I'm a bit suspicious of strong anti-whaling views, as I'm not sure many species are actually endangered. It seems hypocritical; it's not more wrong to kill whales than other animals.

I have never eaten whale meat, and I don't want to eat it either. I don't agree with whaling, which many people think is strange coming from a Japanese person.

I think there should be a concerted international effort to exterminate Wales.
They don't do anything except eat seaweed all day and make loud undecipherable noises.
They have also been known to swallow seaman .

One of us (me) is a bit confused here

First of all do you mean Wales or Whales? or even Japan ?

    Eat seaweed - Whales- No
    Japan - Yes
Wales -- Yes ( laver bread)

    Make loud undecipherable noises
    Whales--Yes
    Japan -- Yes (Karaoke)
Wales --Yes ( Male voice choirs)

    Swallow seamen (sp?)
Whales- Yes (one recorded incident of a religious activist 2000 years ago)
Japan --Yes (Renowned for their fixation with Bukkake)
Wales-- ???? cant find anything in Google and have no experience with the natives of that area.

On the basis of the 3 definite Yes answers that Japan has collected, are we to assume you are suggesting that the international community declares war on Japan ??

    Please clarify
