Suicidal teen urged to jump

A troubled teenager was encouraged to jump to his death by a crowd who stopped to watch him take his life.
Shaun Dykes, 17, climbed over a railing on the roof a Derby shopping centre at 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon when a number of onlookers gathered to watch.
Police set up a cordon as they tried to coax him down but passers-by could see over it.
Eyewitnesses say some shouted at Shaun "go on then, jump," shortly before he fell to his death at 5.30pm.
Police have condemned the actions of those who gathered to watch the events unfold at the Westfield shopping centre, but added legal action would be impossible.
A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: "According to one of the police officers involved it was a small minority of people who were saying things. There's really no specific offence if people were passing comments."
He added: "We have publicly condemned anybody who was involved in that side of things. The problem was that somebody was in a high area where people could see him no matter how big the cordon was."
Shaun, from the Derbyshire village of Kilburn, was studying maths, further maths, business studies and politics at Heanor Gate Science College.
His headteacher Rob Howard said the sixth-form had held a special assembly for him.
Mr Howard said: "It's come out that one or two of the students had been in Derby when it happened and were standing near people who were goading him to jump.
"One student told me he could not believe people place such little value on life. It's almost like they are in a television show. It's unreal.
"The sad thing is that a couple of the students, if they could have got close enough, felt that they could have made a difference. It's very traumatic.
"He seemed to be happy and enjoying college. People who saw him on Friday said there didn't seem to be any problems but you don't know what is going through people's minds. It's very upsetting for his family and friends."
