Person dies in ‘front of passengers’ after being sucked into plane engine at airport
A horrific incident took place at an airport in Amsterdam as a person lost his life after being sucked into a jet engine of the Cityhopper Embraer E190 plane. The incident was witnessed by passengers and ground crew.
The emergency services rushed to the scene when the person, whose remains were stuck in the engine when the plane was preparing to depart Schiphol Airport. The plane was being moved back from the stand to prepare for its flight to Denmark.
While speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, witnesses said there was a "hellish noise" when the incident happened. One passenger said: "Many people saw it happen."
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) airport said in a statement, "Today there was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine. Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this. The Royal Military Police is currently conducting an investigation."
So far, it is not clear whether the individual was a passenger or an employee.
According to the local news source NL Times, all the passengers were evacuated. The Marechaussee, which is a branch of the military responsible for policing the airport, said in a statement: "All passengers and employees of the flight in question have disembarked and are being taken care of."
"Our first concern and thoughts go out to those involved and their relatives. We offer our cooperation and expertise in the investigation into the exact cause," pilots union VNV said in a statement.
Airline KLM said in a statement: "Today there was a horrible incident at Schiphol in which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine. Sadly the person has died. We receive passengers and employees who have seen this at Schiphol. The circumstances are currently being investigated. For further information - as soon as available - we refer to the Royal Military Police."
