Most powerful man in the World is afraid to wish us Merry Xmas!

In his TV message from the White house recently, President Bush said "Happy Holiday everyone". The First Lady said it too!

Isn't that an example of PC gone mad?

And don't they know that 'Holiday' actually means 'Holyday!'

Well, I don't give a fig about PC, 'cos I'm gonna wish all and everyone of you gits on here (even those who are nasty to me)
A VERY MERRY XMAS AND A GREAT NEW YEAR!

Hanakkah is not a very important Jewish holiday. Passover is.

Hanakahh was rammed down the throats of American Jews by the politically correct. So now, it's noted during the Xmas season.

Kwanzaa, is a cult-like celebration that was created in the late 60s.

For the record, I'm agnostic, and don't celebrate anything. But culturally in the US I do attend Xmas parties and Xmas dinners, as Xmas is not a religious holiday but a Pagan one.

Agree with you regarding Kwanza. i thought it some black radical group in the 60's thought the idea up but I thought Hanukkah was much more a tradition in the Jewish religion.
Perhaps both came to my attention more because i spent many years in New York.

My post was a poor attempt at humour based on the OP.

Personally I think you should be able to say whatever you like

Happy Hogswatch to you all! (can't remember the boars other than Tusker!)

That makes three Pratchett readers on TD so far; any more?

Measuring power can be tricky, mainly because few people seem to agree on a definition for it. Does it mean the ability to control people? Incredible wealth? Both, perhaps? Is a man powerful if heads of state stay up at night worrying about him?

I personally think Bush is one of the worlds most ignorant, irresponsible
    leaders of our time!

Sorry, don't share the fucking spirit.

If a dark man is elected, should he wish everyone a happy kwanza?

If a Mormon is elected, should he wish everyone a happy (umm, mormon whatever)

Dubya happens to be a christian, I think, but he represents a multitude of others. Some don't think Christmas is all that cool. They're still Americans (where did that democracy thread go?)

I hate to reverse gears back into a thread over the past few days ... but ffs, he's a politician and should wish the country he represents a happy fucking holiday season, whatever their (affliction).

Open season over. What has your head of state offered in terms of holiday greeting?

The Queen gives a nice Xmas speech for all the old biddys. I prefer the Bond film, myself.

    Happy Xmas everyone.

Of course Christmas (sorry, I hate Xmas - horrid abbreviation!!) is originally a pagan festival. The druids celebrated the Winter Solstice at this time of year etc etc. However Yuletide is an old English term for Christmas - it even features in many Christmas carols. Having said that, it seems all of the traditions are just a mish-mash of paganism, Christianity & Lord knows what else.

You can chuck in the Roman holiday of Saturnalia, too. It was celebrated on the 17th December. The remnants of it's celebration is giving presents and wearing paper party hats.

Has she ever considered that it might send a message of exclusiveness?

Don't misinterpret my post, I think anyone should be able to say merry Christmas. I also think anyone should be able to say happy quanza or happy hannakuah.

But if a leader says to all... happy holidays, he/she shouldn't be chastized.

Hate to dwell on this point, but ...

Armed forces almost never use specific terms during holiday celebrations. For good reason.

The gathered are not carbon copies of each other.

The reason FOR the holiday is Christmas, so shouldn't it be merry Christmas regardless.
Kwanza makes me laugh, they obviously didn't do their research when they were making that one up.
The Kwanza is the name of the river where the slaves were shipped from in Angola.

The TV mini-series Hogfather that came out last year is well worth watching too.

Shouldn't be too hard to find online and will probably be shown on one or two regular channels over the holidays.

and then sitting down to an uninterrupted read of "Saturnalia" by Lindsey Davis.

Any 'Falco' fans out there in TD-land?

Yes, me. Marcus Didius Falco is excellent.
They made one movie of one of the books starring Bryan Brown.

I had really high hopes for the mini-series! Even extended my UK business trip just so I could watch it.

Couldn't take more than Part 1. Production values were OK (heck, not too difficult to replicate Dickensian feel on British soil), script followed the novel closely, but the casting and general "mood" were uninspired.

I got the strong sense that the director had not read any of the novels, and was working just from the script. This is a common enough failing when attempting to cinematize one novel from within a larger series.

The series was better than nothing, and I hope it will encourage new readers for PTerry's works.

I thought it worked quite well - but I guess it depends on how strong the characters already are in your imagination and if your vision clashes with that of the director.
