Turkey has launched a military operation against Kurdish fighters in north-eastern Syria after US forces withdrew from the area, president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced.

Mr Erdogan said on his official Twitter account on Wednesday that the advance, named "Operation Peace Spring", has begun to create a "safe zone" cleared of Kurdish fighters which will also house Syrian refugees.
