Clown gatecrasher sparks P&O cruise ship 'mass brawl'

A passenger who dressed up as a clown and “gatecrashed” a black tie event triggered a “mass brawl” on a P&O cruise, it was claimed yesterday.

Families were forced to flee to their cabins or hide as apparently drunken passengers hurled furniture and plates at one another as a buffet descended into violence.

It is believed a passenger at the black tie party took exception to the arrival of a fellow passenger who dressing up as a clown at the formal event on the 16th floor restaurant.

The P&O Cruises ship, Britannia, was enroute from Bergen, Norway, to Southampton at the end of a week-long cruise when the fight broke out during the early hours of Friday morning.

A series of announcements were made summoning staff and paramedics to the restaurant from around 2am.

One eyewitness said “there was blood everywhere,” adding that the antics of a few “drunken idiots” had spoiled an otherwise enjoyable cruise. Hampshire police, who met the ship after it docked at Southampton yesterday morning, said six people were assaulted suffering “significant bruising and cuts”.

Two people, a 43-year-old man and 41-year-old woman, both from Chigwell, Essex, were arrested on suspicion of assault.

A female entertainer, who did not want to be named but works on the ship, said: "There was a person dressed as a clown and this upset the other passengers.

"Things got out of hand very quickly, people had been drinking, and there was a fight.

"Chairs and plates were being thrown, people were very angry.

"It was shocking to see and some of the staff and passengers were scared and had to hide."

Passengers suspected of being involved in the violence were apparently confined to their cabins until the ship docked at Southampton.

Richard Gaisford, a reporter for ITV's Good Morning Britain show, was on the cruise and tweeted how he was alerted by an announcement summoning help.

"One witness, part of a group involved in the trouble, explained to staff that things kicked off when another passenger appeared dressed as a clown,” he wrote.

"This upset one of their party because they'd specifically booked a cruise with no fancy dress. It led to a violent confrontation."

Mr Gaisford said P&O Cruises staff explained that they had never seen anything like it, and one witness said "there was blood everywhere".

Another passenger said: "I was in my room when the security tannoy happened at 2am.

"Just to clarify, the majority of those onboard were perfectly civilised and nice individuals. It was just ruined by a few drunk idiots."

However, a P&O spokeswoman said a clown was not the cause of the fight, but refused to say what was.

She added: “We don’t tolerate disruptive behaviour. Following an incident on board Britannia we can confirm that all guests have now disembarked and the matter is now in the hands of the local police.”

The Britannia cruise liner, which is described by P&O Cruises as “family friendly,” “stylish” and offering a “truly memorable trip”, can accommodate 3,647 guests and 1,350 crews. The passengers would have paid around £1,000 for the trip. Britannia weighs 143,000 tonnes.

A man and woman arrested over a mass brawl which broke out on a British cruise ship have been released from custody but remain under investigation.

Six people were hurt as P&O's Britannia sailed to Southampton after a week-long trip to Norway's fjords.

A 43-year-old man and a woman, 41, both from Chigwell, Essex, were arrested on suspicion of assault.

Plates and furniture were reportedly used as weapons during the incident in the early hours of Friday.

Good Morning Britain journalist Richard Gaisford, who was on board, said the violence occurred after a black-tie evening and an afternoon of "patriotic" partying on deck, when large amounts of alcohol were consumed.

Writing on Twitter, he said: "Witnesses told me they were so frightened they had to hide, as family groups fought."

cruises, like air travel, used to be an experience that only the sophisticated, the educated, the professional and the intelligent were able to enjoy in the secure knowledge that their quiet enjoyment would not be spoilt or disturbed by the antics of the churl, the boor or the vulgarian.

the hoi polloi, the chav, the brickie, the ex con and of course their screeching harpie bints were restricted, thanks to their lower incomes, lower standards and lower class, to blackpool, clacton and margate and were rarely to be found at airports or aboard cruise liners. they were content to restrict their boorish antics to the pub, the street and the home rather than inflict their chaos on society at large. the police had greater powers in those days too and miscreants would be immediately taken to the cells and given a good "talking to".

these days of course every beefed up tom dick and harry has access to a grand a week, unlimited credit and a sense of entitlement the size of the grand canyon and thanks to the pile em high and sell em cheap nature of travel these oafish chavs with their repulsively obese and ill disciplined families are to found in places that even a decade ago they would never have dared showed their ugly faces.

it pains me to say it, but the lower end brit, with their inability to control their drinking, their temper and their similarly afflicted offspring, are indeed a blight on decent society, and wherever in the world they are to be found, they bring shame and dishonour to the once good name of britain.

one of the downsides to brexit is that we shall be further removed from the sophistication, style and peaceful joie de vie that the european brings to the table.

Thankfully a lot of cruises aren't family friendly so you don't have to put up with screaming kids and if you choose to book a cheapy cruise bit like a 2 week package holiday in South of Spain you know what you are going to get and the type of people on it. Still plenty of options out of reach of the lower end.

Seems a bit of an overkill. I would have thought that 1 crew would have been enough.

Fracas aside, who brings a damn clown outfit on a cruise? It’s hard enough to squeeze the clothes you’ll need in a suitcase!

Indeed, Tax, when the English trash assume full coon status to match their lumpen, boorish, nignog, hottentot behaviour, the EU will be able to rid themselves of the drunken sots by simply deporting the fuckers whenever they offend, at the expense of the inbound carrier. And once removed they will remain on the database and be barred from re-entry after their ETIAS status is suspended.

A Brit scum-free Med at last! They'll all fuck off to Turkey and trashy places in Egypt.

    Bliss eh?

you seem to be forgetting that the role of tone lowering so expertly executed by the fat bellicose lower end brit will quickly be assumed by the bulgarian, the latvian, the rumanian and to a lesser extent the pole, who themselves are no strangers to alcohol fuelled anti social and criminal behaviour and the desire to bring disorder to where previously there was mostly only order.

This was the best real life troll of all time.
They specifically booked a cruise with no fancy dress.
Someone, knowing this, booked the same cruise and took along a clown suit and wore it to their nemises formal function.

    What a shit stir.
I'd love to know the backstory.

It has been a while since I booked a cruise and I don't recall being given a "no fancy dress" option, but the fancy dress party on the last night was good fun.
