If you’re planning on holidaying around Spain this summer, be prepared to take some extra cash.
You could be made to pay up to £70 in ‘tourism tax’ just for visiting the sunny destination.
Spain has set a new record for visitors, with 29.2 million visitors in June, 4.2% more than the same period in 2014. Spain is also expected to be the main destination of tourists seeking a value-for-money all-inclusive holiday after the Tunisia attack.

Brits have been left furious after authorities agreed the new duty for ‘sustainable tourism’ in March, long after many had booked their breaks.
Yet whether you’ve booked it or not, you’re going to have to pay.
The new charge will come into force for anyone holidaying after July 1.



What does it mean?
The new charge means that when you arrive at your booked hotel, you’ll have to pay two extra euros to the hotel for each night you intend to stay.
It varies from hotel to hotel based on their star rating, so a 1* to 3* hotel would cost €1 per day per person, while a 4-5* hotel would cost €2
Though the charges half after the ninth day, it means a family of four with kids over 16 could have to fork out an extra £70 over a fortnight.

here do the charges apply?
The charges apply to the Balearic Islands, which include Majorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca.
Villas, campsites and private houses are not exempt either.
People travelling to Malta will also be charged a new fee from June, which will be 40p per night, but this will be capped at five euros.
The funds are said to be going towards protecting the island’s natural resources.
But furious families in the UK feel tourism chiefs are just trying to profit from the rise in bookings to Spain following the decline of tourist destinations like Egypt and Tunisia, following terror attacks.

Why 'up to 70' euros.

If you have 25 kids it will be waaay more.

This applies to the Balearics, so is basically the same as the national park tax on Koh Samed and others.

Spain is mimicking the inventive Thais in raising funds to protect the fragile ecosystem.

If this is only applied to non spanish people then it contravenes about 23 EU Laws and as such will never be enforced.... Unless it is the EU junta who came up with the scam, at which point it will be enforced, and spread allaround Europe as another way too get their thieving hands on peoples money.

Not surprising since Spain is broke and don't be surprised to see 'tourist fees' popping up all over Europe. Spain has just opened the gate.

Time to holiday in England and for a revival of the English coastal towns.

I don't like the Spanish as they attempted to swindle me in currency dealings when I toured there. I will never visit this den of thieves again. I have my own personal boycott of all their produce, fruits, wines, etc. and I urge others to do likewise. They are a shower of shit. No offence intended.

So you prefer to visit Thailand where there is absolutely no swndling going on with their tours. Interesting.

The Spanish did not steal from me but they tried many times. They are stupid to think that I am less intelligent than they are. Likewise the Thais do not swindle me either. I become upset and get a touch of the "jai rorn" when people think I am daft and then try to take my money. Call me old fashioned but I like honest people. I am au fait with Thailand and am happy there. The reality is that I do not trust any bugger and am always on the alert, and, in consequence, I have become a miserable bastard.

Believe me, you have already been swindled in Thailand. Maybe you are not aware of it, and by saying Thais do not swindle you just proves my point. Swindling is a way of life here and is everywhere. If you do not believe me, just look up the definition of the word SWINDLE.

I sctatched Phi Phi Island off my to see list many years ago. Funny that so many tourists want to see this movie backdrop and pay such inflated prices.

We stick to going to where Thais go for their holidays. Choa Loa these days. Chaolao Beach Chanthaburi with the extended family eating BBQ's on the beach is a nice relaxing break.

Visitors already pay through the nose to visit Samui. You can pay the extortionate Bangkok Airways prices to arrive by air, or the time consuming route via Suratthani by air bus and ferry.
Every tourist should pay a minimum Bt3000 levy to come here. No queuing behind Chinese and Korean tourists while they buy the local 7/11 stock of ham and cheese toasties and smuggle them into their 3 star hotels, so they don't have to use the restaurants. The c u n t s
