Rare Rhino Dies, Leaving Three Left In World

A northern white rhinoceros - one of just four remaining worldwide - has died at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in California.

The 41-year-old female called Nola had been receiving treatment for a bacterial infection and underwent surgery on 13 November, according to a statement on the zoo's website.

She was placed under constant veterinary watch last week after her appetite and activity levels declined.

"Early this morning, the team made the difficult decision to euthanise her," the zoo said in a statement.

Nola had lived at the zoo since 1989.

"Nola leaves a legacy that her keepers and animal care staff hope will continue to help rhino conservation for years to come," the zoo added.

The world's three remaining northern white rhinoceroses reside at a conservatory in Kenya.
