Russia assumes rotating UN Security Council presidency for September

The Russian Federation on Tuesday assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for September.
Vitaly Churkin, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, took over the rotating council presidency from the Permanent Representative of Nigeria, Uche Joy Ogwu, who held the council presidency for August.
Churkin will provide a briefing for member states of the United Nations that are non-members of the Council on the programme of work for the month Wednesday in the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the UN headquarters.
He has been Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN since 2006. He holds a Ph.D. in history and is a graduate of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.
Under the UN Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of peace and security in the world at large.
