Hunger Strike for Brit Jailed in Iran for Attending Volleyball Match

British woman held in Iran for trying to watch volleyball match goes on hunger strike to mark 100 days since she was jailed

A young British-Iranian woman has gone on hunger strike to mark 100 days since she was jailed for trying to watch a volleyball match.
For five days Ghoncheh Ghavami has refused food in defiance of her detainment at Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison where she has been held in solitary confinement.
The 25-year-old law graduate from SOAS, part of the University of London, was arrested in June for ‘propaganda against the regime’ after trying to watch a men’s sports game which women in Iran are banned from attending.

Ghavami’s mother, Susan Moshtaghian, 49, told the Guardian that she too had gone on hunger strike and was increasingly worried about her daughter’s condition.
‘I am extremely concerned about Ghoncheh’s health and life. I hold [the] authorities fully responsible for any harm inflicted on my daughter,’ she said.
Moshtaghian, from London, was allowed to visit Ghavami for the first time in 19 days on Saturday.

‘People die from hunger strike. It’s a very serious situation and it’s been five days now,’ he said.
A petition started by Iman on the site Change.org has so far collected more than 528,000 signatures.
Ghavami was questioned for four hours after being arrested for trying to enter the Azadi Stadium.
She was released but rearrested days later when she tried to collect her belongings from a police station and officers discovered dual citizenship.
Ghavami was only told on September 23 that she was formally charged with ‘propaganda against the regime’ – a charge that carries a possible prison term of several years. Her case is due to be heard by Tehran’s notorious revolutionary court.
The Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, was questioned about Ghavami’s detention on Christiane Amanpour’s CNN show in September.

An Iranian and a graduate from SOAS should really have known what she was doing and the risks involved, as she surely does with her hunger strike. Anyway, she hasn't had her day in court yet (she seems to be on remand), so anything could happen. I'm sure her hunger strike is part of her strategy to get a favourable decision.

Any minute now one of the weirdos will be along to tell us Iran is actually a paradise of freedom and womens' rights, and this is all just all propaganda from the evil West.

Myself, I wouldn't throw her out of bed for eating cream crackers.

Looks a lot like actress Rachel Weisz, imo. Noice.

Here we go again same pattern as always :

-- Cheating scum in zero danger decides to move to Britain using lax asylum laws :
claiming it's not safe to return home.
-- Refugee status granted along with free education etc ..
    -- Gets British passport and
next day decides to fly back home to show it off and brag about free welfare etc
    -- Gets jailed ...
    ha ha

Be careful what you make up, it may come true ..

An array of student-led activities will take place at SOAS, University of London this month to mark Black History Month. The workshops, organised by the SOAS Students’ Union, will focus on a wide range of issues relating to representations of black women, rewriting black British history and racial patriarchy.

A few more details of the case: https://www.amnesty.org.uk/actions/i...tch-volleyball

On 20 June Ghoncheh joined dozens of other women and men who were protesting outside Tehran’s Azadi Stadium where Iran were playing Italy in the 2014 International Federation of Volleyball World League games. They were demanding women be allowed equal access into the stadium. Since 2012 women have been banned from attending volleyball matches in stadiums in Iran.

If I have understood this Telegraph article correctly, Ms Ghavami is a woman's rights activist.

British-Iranian woman goes on hunger strike after arrest for attending men's volleyball match - Telegraph

Miss Ghavami was detained outside the Azadi Stadium in the capital, Tehran, after she and fellow women’s rights campaigners tried to enter the arena to watch an Iran-Italy volleyball match.
Under the country’s restrictive Islamic codes, women are forbidden to mingle with male spectators at sports facilities.
Shiva Nazar Ahari, a leading rights activist, was among the women protesting alongside Miss Ghavami that day. She has written on her Facebook page that their demand simply was to be allowed to enter the stadium.
“We wanted to go to the stadium together. We wanted to go sit on those chairs to scream and cheer for our national team,” she wrote.
The protesters – who all wore white headscarves in defiance of rules demanding dark coloured hijabs – had tried to get through heavy security but were arrested.
Perhaps more interesting is this ...

Iran’s judiciary denies the charges against Ms Ghavami concern the stadium visit, with spokesman Ghulam Hussein Mohseni Ejeyie saying last month that Miss Ghavami has been charged with “propaganda against the regime”.
“Miss Ghavami’s arrest and imprisonment has nothing to do with the issue of sports and women’s participations in stadiums, and is a national security matter, he said.

..... there is little in practice that Britain can do, as Iran does not recognise dual nationality and sees Miss Ghavami as an Iranian citizen.

I admire her for standing by her beliefs.

Far more than the murderous, woman-hating shi'a mussie twats that stand by theirs.

Frankly for such a heinous crime as "trying to watch a volleyball match", I'm surprised the Mullahs haven't ordered her to be stoned to death.

Thing is, you don't actually know what she is in for, do you? Cripes, she even looks like a model in the shots. Wouldn't at all be surprised if the whole story was faked.
