The Independent on Sunday has learned that a military decision has been taken in Iran – even before last week’s presidential election – to send a first contingent of 4,000 Iranian Revolutionary Guards to Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad’s forces against the largely Sunni rebellion that has cost almost 100,000 lives in just over two years.

Interesting that the US is arming the Sunni rebels and those arms will easily find their way into another Sunni rebel group who are an AlQaida mob.

He wants to suggest that furriners should stay out of this conflict as it is shaping up to be a thousand year old spat between Sunnis and Shiites. When people talked about the Yugoslavian situation as some sort of irremediable ancient religious conflict, people like Fisk were quick to point out how that was just an obfuscation.

I do respect Fisk, but keep the salt handy when reading him.

I wonder what those 4,000 Iranian conscripts are thinking about becoming the newest targets on the planes of Syria? Just saying, any soldier going to some location to fight and possibly die for a country that really has "0" significance to you personally.
