Five Aussie soldiers killed in Afghanistan - biggest one day loss since Vietnam

Defence has confirmed that five Australian soldiers have been killed in two separate incidents in Afghanistan.

Three Australian soldiers were killed by a man in an Afghan army uniform in a 'green on blue' attack at a base in Uruzgan province in the south of the country yesterday.

Two other Australian soldiers were wounded in that incident.

In a separate incident early this morning, two special forces soldiers were also killed when their chopper crashed in the Helmand province.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said that in a war of so many losses, this was Australia's single worst day in Afghanistan and "the most losses in combat since the days of the Vietnam War".

Here is how the news was broken to the nation and how its leaders and military experts reacted.

9:10pm: The head of NATO issued his condolences to the Australian people.
"Our thoughts are with the loved ones of those killed and wounded in Afghanistan, and with the Australian people," Brussels-based secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Twitter.

The Dane said he had spoken to Australia's NATO ambassador earlier in the day "to express my condolences for the tragic loss Australia suffered in the last 24 hours."

He added: "Australia's response to these tragic events in Afghanistan is exemplary. Australia is a strong and steadfast NATO partner."

Makes my stomach turn every time I see a NATO soldier die there. Wish the politicians were all sent there. What are the boys fighting for, a place that no one has cared about and a people that hate our guts, Leave and in 50 years it will still be a shit hole. Jim

The brave boys that fought and died at Long Tan (Vietnam), at least had a chance to fight for life.
This shithole of a nation, along with the sponsoring next door shithole ISI Paki,
(Oh we can get big infulence in Afghan. whe the infidel leaves). these brave boys never got a chance to fight, they were fucking murdered.
Sooner we all ISAF get out of that festpit the better.

^ Do Not feel ashamed, it is what your country and most civilised country tried.
The fact that it has not won is not your fault.
The civilised world cannot impose our will on those that do not want to be civilised.
Head up mate, in 18 months all our troops will be out of that land and they carry on killing their own.

    Fuck you asshole.

Is that the way you seen world war 2 ? The Nazi's were morally equal to the allies ?

There is a force for good and a force of evil in the world and if you don't see the difference then you are one sick twisted fuck.
