Or nee, the popular Teochew dessert made with mashed yam, is not new to the Singapore culinary scene.
But a Fuzhou restaurant from China – the 142-year-old Spring JuChunYuan which opened a branch here in June this year – has turned this humble dessert into an art.
Their trick is to use yams from Fuzhou in China’s Fujian province, which have a different texture from local ones. The or nee turns out to be satiny smooth and is sweetened just enough to be pleasant without being cloying.
It is very light too, and there isn’t that layer of oil or sugar syrup like what you find at Teochew restaurants here.
Best of all, it is not even expensive. A single serving, piped into a small bowl like icing, costs only $3 per portion.
You simply must leave room for it when you dine here.
