    On Topic - Off Topic

A while ago I started a thread called When Do You Give Up On A Thread? (When do you give up on a thread?). My point being that many threads on TD go way off topic after a page or two. My plaint was answered with comments like this:

And yet recently a number of off topic posts have been deleted from various threads.

Does this signal a change in TD policy? Are off-topic posts no longer allowed?

I hope the mods are ready for their massively increased workload....

I think threads go off-topic as they turn into more of a conversation than a dedicated subject & conversations drift. I like it. If nobody has anything to say about the thread then it probably wasn't much of a thread to begin with.

Nope, just from the serious sections of the board more posts have been moved into moronic kiddies forum.

This is one of the threads to which I was referring:

    https://teakdoor.com/construction-in-...-thailand.html

Can we please have some guidelines as to how far off topic we can go before threads get deleted, or is this just an arbitrary and capricious decision left up to the mods?

The top half of the board has always been seriously moderated, you are sounding a bit hysterical stating "when threads get deleted" a few probably abusive posts were trashed from the thread and that was it, in the last few weeks 2 threads have been trashed, one of yours for discussing what cant be discussed on a Thai forum regardless of how vaguely it is worded, and the foreign language thread as the mod got pissed off with trashing blackpanthers posts every few minutes, he has 9 posts in the trash from yesterday by the way.

I moved some threads to the trash. ...
What he meant is "posts", not "threads". A thread is a string of comments under a topic heading, the individual contributions are called "posts".

Not everyone slags off "Thais" as inferior beings because they had some probs with their construction workers.
It's this kind of obnoxious racist drivel which needs deleting pronto.

ahhh didn't bother reading the quoted bit as I assumed it was from this thread.

There are no moderators for the whole board, they moderate the forums they are interested in, so there will all ways be different levels of moderation, this happens on every forum in the world, we aint got no one that is willing to read 40 to 80 new threads perday and 700 to 1,400 posts perday.

So, Dr. Andy's suggestion that I put piranha in my pond was deemed to be "on topic" yet his discussion of how to select Thai workers in another construction thread was determined to be "off topic".

    Please explain.

Seems okay to me, the ones they sell in the pet shop aren't man killers or anything, think they eat normal fish food.

I think it's ok for threads to go off topic for a bit if they're fleshing out pertinent topics, BUT some mod should come in and gently guide the thread back on course.

And, mods should cut petty bickering as it can go on for pages and pages and ruin otherwise good threads.

Ah oh, I guess I'm lobbying for the beginning of the end. Moderators. Seriously, in terms of gaining a wider audience of participation, there will have to be some moderation though minimally intrusive.

For sure, mods are needed, but not sTrollers kind where he deletes a bunch of posts on his area and then goes off on the other forums and doing shit like he deletes for and slagging off on other posters.

posts racist/Bigot shit and then calls others bigot/racist for the same he just posted.

Thats basically my viewpoint, but I'm only an Issues Mod.
One good thing TD mod's do is split threads- when a thread goes so off topic it effectively becomes a new, different topic a new thread is started with it- not always MKP either.
At least one century thread has originated this way.

DD, I like you guys' concept here and certainly can't fault you for running your show the way you want. I just think in terms of ratcheting up longer term and meaningful participation from other "defectors" there would have to be some rules to maintain order.

Hell, even UFC and Pride had to do that to keep people from getting killed, as we've discussed on the UFC forum.

People left to their own devices just won't act in anything but their own best interests.

ok I just had a look in both trash bins, now issues has their own bin and mods room, and the rest of the forum has its own mods room and trash bin, this week issues has 21 trashed items, the rest of the forum 88, ok it doesn't take into account if 2 or 3 posts were trashed from the same thread, but, we feel it is better just to chuck the crap in the moronic kiddies forum, the less stuff stuck in the trash the less complaints of over moderation, to view the moronic forum members need 10 posts, so guests etc don't have to read all that rubbish, also its a good place to stick naughty posters in for a couple of days aswell, saves banning or suspending them

what is a mod's room, is that where you lock them up at night so they don't wander off?
