Making the effort to do picture threads, Why Bother ?

Yesterday Bobcock done a blinder of a Picture thread on America.

Today the thread is buried away in the travel section without going through the front page.

This has been explained by a Mod that only certain subjects will be retained on the front page and at the moment its building and Thai related threads.

Why make the effort to do these picture threads when the vast majority of punters will miss it unless it makes the weekly mail out. ?

Before the change on this forum all new threads went through the front page and dropped of as new threads came along.

This new format is absolute bull shit as it elicits no reason to make the effort to do picture threads when the majority of readers will miss it.

Give me a decent reason why my opinion is wrong. ?

Ive got the last installment of my Burma trip to post but at the moment Am holding off because of the fact that it will just be buried immediately after Ive finished it.

Be a good one too, its on Mandalay and no one has ever done Mandalay.

    Whatever EH.

In all fairness Ter, most would know how to navigate themselves to the lovely travel photo threads...

That being said, I believe most will be in agreement towards the newly fashioned cycling of the front page - as it seems to be limited and redundant daily without fresh content [such as travel threads] which TD is somewhat well-known for.

Only if they go searching for a particular country, if they don't search they miss out on the thread all together unless there lucky and some one bumps it.

The travel, cooking and building threads should be automatically added to the front page and stay there until they fall from the bottom of the page as other threads are added.

Why they ever changed this format is beyond me, these are the best content on this forum and attract traffic unlike some of the current shit that seems to be glued there lately.

    Strange days indeed.

Travel threads should be front and centre. Agree with Tel.

    Because you are an Aussie.

Actually I agree with you, things like the travel threads that might pull in casual visitors to TD should get more exposure.

I agree as well. Put the home made foods up on the main page as well. No fighting and bickering just drooling and salivating.

Its just silly that the best thread on the board right now is buried under a ton of shit not worth responding to.

Good point. I too get tired of the same stuff every day when I open TD. Was looking for Bob's excellent thread this morning as well.

Couldnt agree with you more Tel ,, infact generally speaking it makes me wonder why people ( myself included ) bother to do them at all .

Apparently members on here love photo threads of any kind allthough the vast majority never bother to do one , and when you do put in the time and effort to do one for them you might well get 1000 + views and quite probably only 2% can be arsed to leave a comment along the way .

To me thats how a forum works by sharing comments also your experiences with others , adding to as the thread goes along .

Then again if you want to get a popular thread going on here , just go out get pissed outta your undercrackers start spewing out your best playground language convince everyone your " honest John telling it like it is " send a few threatening PM,s and the jobs a goodun ,, well it is after you get released from jail again

I agree with you, Terry, 110%! I have found several travel / picture threads only when they've been bumped. I always check the date the threads were started, and on most of them, I wonder how I missed them if I was on the forum at that time.

That home page needs sorting out, as I've mentioned before most threads on the top half of that home page are duplicated on the lower half.

It's none of my business though to try and tell the powers that be how to promote the most important page of a website.

But unlike a new customer, I know how to find the photo threads and where all the good stuff is

When I log on I go straight to new posts. I never look at the main page. And I presume newcomers would scroll through the different forum titles anyways, so not sure why the mods changed it, or why people think it makes a difference.

Sometimes I have nothing to say other than thanks or great pics, a page of every poster doing that gets boring.

The photo threads are not always interesting to view, but there will be something for everyone.

I have looked at many without adding comment and admit those that post photos with blanked out faces are the worse to view.

Probably just my opinion but it adds so much more when you can connect a particular thread to a member.

It kind of goes along with what fly free quoted as to just checking out google images!

There is a world travel forum were members post there travel threads but I would think potential new members or guest do not look into a Thai themed forum to view photos of England for example.

Not to say currant members including myself do not enjoy them as its plain to see they do.

I take most interest in places I have never been to and maybe never will get the chance to experience!.
Seeing a place you have visited is also nice even if just to view it from another,s perspective.

It's a setting on the website software. They just have to include the travel section on the front page. easy fix.

I do agree though - front page is not very dynamic.

Yep, Terry is on the button. You make the effort to share something interesting and useful so it makes sense that a photo thread gets a good innings.

..and there in lie the key.

What is or isn't interesting? Some pictures of the US? A couple of pictures of an out of the way beach somewhere? A unique or antique piece of machinery?

    Different strokes for different folks.

    Interesting concept,

Bobcocks photos are world class, quite brilliant actually, informative and showing things that many would never get to see.

But you are correct as some would much prefer a blow by blow account of Peter from Bournemouth and Nok from Issan getting it on down Soi Yod sak.

Fair enough. Thing is any fuking idiot can do that.

As this is a Thailand based forum I do believe anything Thai should get prefernce over some some pics from seppo land.

While we're banging on about it I think it would be great to have a picture link or direct link from the front page to Mr Licks World News In Pictures thread too. It's an awesome way of updating yourself with global events (alongside the odd news source too )
