Plan very early, because it does get busy and the nicer hotels will be fully booked months ahead of time. I think we started about 6 months in advance.

We were able to get a room for our Japanese guide at each of the hotels above except while in Tokyo (where she lived) and while in Kyoto (she stayed at another hotel just down the street).
