Kicks on Route 66 - Cross country

Last week, I left my hometown for a move out to Las Vegas. Traveled by car with two friends and my chihuahua. Oh, my, what an epic road trip.

Traveled from Gray, Georgia to Hartsfield International and picked up one of the gals who flew in from Ohio.

From there through northern Alabama, stopping for barbecue lunch at Evan’s. Funky little place with good food.

First sightseeing trip was to Tupelo, Mississippi, birthplace of Elvis.



And just after that, a massive rainstorm hit, so we got no other pics. This one not mine.

The rain storm lasted through the night an the next day. Elvis was a wash.

Stayed a dumpy little hotel with a pool in the shape of a guitar which was just across the street from Graceland.



Walked over to Graceland in the rain but not open yet. Took some pics from the gate and decided not to wait around to go inside on the grounds.

Our ride was a 2019 Honda CRV with driver assist. Beats the hell out of that “epic ride” for comfort! We rode on I-40 most of the way and exited on Route 66 occasionally. Route 66 was paved in the 1930’s. Couldn’t have made it in one of those old sleds.

We stopped in Yukon, Oklahoma for a night. Nothing much to see there, so kept on the next morning to the Texas Panhandle.

^It’s true, that. We saw what devastation the Interstate lay on those small towns which existed only on tourism from Route 66. Tucumcari was ruined.

U.S. Route 66 or U.S. Highway 66 (US 66 or Route 66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System. US 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year.^[4] The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before terminating in Santa Monica in Los Angeles County, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).^[5] It was recognized in popular culture by both the 1946 hit song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route 66television series, which aired on CBS from 1960 to 1964. In John Steinbeck's novel, The Grapes of Wrath (1939), the road "Highway 66" symbolized escape and loss.
US 66 served as a primary route for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and the road supported the economies of the communities through which it passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive in the face of the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.
US 66 underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime, but was officially removed from the United States Highway System in 1985^[2] after it had been replaced in its entirety by segments of the Interstate Highway System. Portions of the road that passed through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been communally designated a National Scenic Byway by the name "Historic Route 66", returning the name to some maps.^[6][7] Several states have adopted significant bypassed sections of the former US 66 into their state road networks as State Route 66. The corridor is also being redeveloped into U.S. Bicycle Route 66, a part of the United States Bicycle Route System that was developed in the 2010s.

Just brought back memories of a trip about 20 years ago whilst at the time living in Spain, flew into Charlotte NC, picked up a hire car, then the next day drove over the Blue Ridge to Nashville. A couple of nights there, including an evening at the 'Grand Ole Opry', then continued to Memphis. Stayed at The Peabody (famed for the ducks that live on the roof that are brought down by lift to the hotel foyer each day, walking across a red carpet to a fountain and pond for a splash around. Did Graceland and surprised at how relatively small it is, certainly not a grand mansion. From recollection, Elvis had bought it from a local doctor? Very commercial of course, particularly the other side of the road where his cars and plane are.

Drove from Memphis back to Charlotte direct for a final couple of nights there, including seeing Elton John and Billy Joel together in what was called 'The Face To Face Tour' at the Coliseum.

I particularly remember all the Dogwood in bloom along the roads over the Blue Ridge, and passed though didn't go in, 'Dollywood', Dolly Parton's theme park outside Knoxville.

The Eagles song written by songwriter Jackson Browne in 1971 was inspired by this very location.
Browne has said he was in the back of a van after his car broke down in Flagstaff and some new friends offered him a ride to Los Angeles. He was inspired to write some of the lyrics to the song after seeing a woman in a truck pulling out of what was then the red-and-mustard colored Wienerschnitzel restaurant at the corner of East Route 66 and North Switzer Canyon.
It's now called the Dog Haus.

We intended to check out El Mapias in New Mexico but it was closed due to fire hazard, so we went to see some lava tubes on private land.

This is a natural freezer created by air current. It was 31 degrees in the ice hole.
