Why is it so bad to throw money in somebody's face??

I was at the Ban Rai coffee house in Ekkamai yesterday, which has some of the most obsequious, slow staff I have ever encountered, constantly trying to do everything for you, pouring your beer, changing your ash tray, and placing your cutlery on the table in that achingly slow and dainty way.

When the bill came it was about 460 baht, what I expected - anyway I screwed the notes into a ball and threw it in the face of the waiter - an action which didn't go down too well to say the least. He looked shocked and angry and said something in Thai and walked off as I picked up the money. Moments later he returned with some kind of superior who spoke better English and he stood there next to her sulking whilst she asked me if everything was okay.

I explained everything was fine and threw the money in the guys face again but this time all hell broke loose and even the superior woman asked me to leave. Some people have no sense of humour, I resally don't see the problem. I have thrown money in my own face and it's not like it hurts, it's paper for goodness sakes!

You are lucky you didn't get a jolly good box around the ears.

Why not wipe your arse with it first then throw it in the waiters face?

Actually, I find it hard to believe you did this - do it again and get a mate to video it.

But why is it a bad thing to do?

Is it just in Thailand or is this an unwise thing to do in any country?

    Get a life.

It implies you don't think the sevice/product was worth the money.

The next post presumably will be asking why you got beaten senseless for giving a katoey the bird.

Scampy doesn't have much bill paying experience so I believe this is an honest enquiry and not just an attention seeking thread.

indeed, I bet it's a new technique he is thinking about for not paying bills and do a runner, and was testing the ground for that trick

Actually its not as silly as it sounds, he could tear a 500b note in half and scam 2 meals out of it.

I did a similar thing a while back. A Thai guy done me a good turn but wouldn't take any money. As he drove off I tossed 100 Baht through his open window. It was my missus that got uppity about it and told me never to do it again. She's says it's something you would do to someone pleading/begging for money. Instead of giving it to them you throw it into a cup or a mat in front of them.

Maybe offended at too a small tip. Try also throwing some 10 baht coins in his face on your next visit.

I agree it would make a good dadaist project to be filmed breaking social conventions. Its been done before of course, but not in Thailand.

Jesus ! If you really did this, and it's not a wind-up, then it's no wonder that farangs have a bad reputation here.
You been taking some bad drugs, TGS ? Or too much alcohol ?
This is definitely neither gentlemanly nor scampish behaviour.

There's a thread somewhere about Scampy stealing a shirt from a shop and then taking it back the following day.
He tried to make out he felt guilty but in reality the shirt was too small and he wanted to change it.

I don't understand why you would do this if everything was satisfactory, as your post would indicate.
