    How much is too much?

Since starting to use these forum thingies properly I have seen a trend in people revealing more and more information about themselves to groups of relatively complete strangers.

Now for me I find this rather worrying trend. This is personal information that could be used against a person or stolen for other reasons.

Over the last few months we have seen the downfall of stickman and the firing of a poster called Macha from his job.

Over on Ajarn.com Louis aka LDMA is not scared of putting all his personal details on the internet Which includes photos of his wife and children. for a fairly high profile character in the internet circles he runs in you would think a firewall of sorts would be a good option.

The same can be said for the poster known as Bangkok Phil (not you Mad Dog the real one)

At what point has a person given out too much information. Is it when they use the same username on different forums? When they post their picutre? Their address and workplace? Their families details.

Once the photos are out there on the internet without a copyright stamp stuck on them whose property are they? What if they are abused.

Any opinions on all this then?

Too much detail definitely brings problems. It is used by low-lives who need to boost their own sagging egos. A few slips and you will be haunted until that moniker is killed off.

LDMA & BKK Shill are just plain stupid. Shill does it to feed his ego & tout for business - LDMA is too stupid to know otherwise.

If you have nothing to hide and are all above board, then i don't really see the problem.

All it takes Memock is to upset the wrong person and they are able to hunt you down and get you.

Look at the famous Dr Pat Pong, he has pissed of people from all over the place yet he isn't known

It's not about being stupid. They are running business's after all which is a good reason to do it. However there must be a point though where you have to take into account your position and whether or not there is a chance of a nutter stalking you.

There was that famous Bronco picture which was posted elsewhere on the internet but was then abused in other forums. I don;t think that Bronco would have expected that to have happened but it did.

This isn't an anti ajarn thread Diaw it's a thread about too much info. LDMA and Bkk Phil are good examples as are Stickman and Macha where things have gone wrong.

Even you are into it... It definitely pays to be careful & discrete... the internet world, especially in Thailand, is full of loons...

Your wife gets up late, has big hands like a monkey (manky)... based on your submissions, one gets an overall impression about someone - whether correct, or not. Forums can be too disarming & we open ourselves up for the kill.

A nutter can spot you shopping at Big C with your missus and decide to follow you home.

I don't see that it matters too much.

I exercise an element of anonymity, but only because I run off at the mouth from time to time in ways I wouldn't in real life...

Not having a dig at you Diaw just pointing out that this is not a purely anti-ajarn thread.

Look at stickman and his alleged insult or bad mouthing of some random guys friends business.

I learned the hard way. I originally opened my tale of woe as it went down in order for other falangs to be aware of the nonsense that can go down in Thailand. That old Ajarn thread thread originally started by asking how much folks gave towards supporting their spouses & extended family - & ended up as a saga. I think it gave many folks a wake-up call.

Unfortunately, it also branded my moniker for abuse & attack - for life. I post under alternative names on other forums, now, with no personal attack at all - but, open the 'diaw' moniker & it gets hit within seconds.

Same person, different moniker. Human nature is daft. I plan to use many of my observations in a book about internet forums & their psyche.

Personal information has value. Like Torbek mentione there is the occassional nut-case that may attach some terrible action to your face or personality.

Famous people like actors, politicians, anyone with a public presence usually have some sort of security if they can afford it. There is a reason for this. I, on occassion, have let too much personal information out. Posted my kids pictures on the net (they are more than 20 year old pics though). Postin current pics or data about yourself is just askin for trouble. There are some real weird mother-fuckers surfin the net...

Just like there are in the real world as well but you don't see me never leaving my house, same as online. Be safe sure but no need to be paranoid.

Yeah I agree. Unless there is something you want to hide about yourself then letting some people in your community know about your self and your loved ones is much more positive than the very very small risk that some nutter will latch onto you in some movie like situation.

PS since this is my first post I'm Mark and I'm the new owner of Pirates Cove in Chiang Mai. Hi to all my regulars on this board

I do so via pm or when I meet people I like. I wouldn't pass pics of my family and my address around in a pub, either, which is in some ways comparable to a forum where everyone can chip in to a conversation.

I have been wondering that for some time.
There are so many forums these days, is being known in one forum or another going to make any difference in your life?
I actually do not think so...

You read about that boy who got 'owned' or however it was spelt over a set of shock absorbers? HIs whole personal life came out over something that was really rather small.

Having the same username here and on TV can also get you banned from there if you behave like a ****.

However I'm not sure what that would mean in the real world though. Maybe people would not offer assistance because of your persona that is attached to a partiucular username.

Well, do you really need assistance from people posting in forums with you?
    I hope not...

    Advice or info yes

    Personal assistance no.

Saying that though there are certain posters who I wouldn't want to help even though I have been told they are lovely in the flesh. SImply becuase of their behaviour on here.

It's been known to happen, Bluecat should know.

I like to think some people I converse with on the net would care if I had some problem and send some nice thoughts ol' stroller's way.

I think you'll find it was DD that diverted the thread onto one of his many personal obsessions
