Which do you prefer: television or reading?

... I'd stick to the reading if I were you:

    Bookcase 'trap' killed US woman

The body of a missing US woman has been found by her family, wedged upside down behind a bookcase in her room.

Mariesa Weber, 38, is believed to have fallen over and become trapped as she tried to reach behind the bookcase to adjust the plug for a TV set.
Her family spent nearly two weeks searching for her, fearing she had been kidnapped from the house she shared with them in Florida.
Ms Weber may have died of suffocation, a local police spokesman said.
Her death was not being treated as suspicious, the spokesman said.
Ms Weber's parents last saw her alive in the family house on 28 October.
Unable to locate her after that, the family contacted the police, fearing she had been abducted.
Her body was eventually discovered when her sister noticed a foot protruding behind the bookcase in her bedroom.
"I'm sleeping in the same house as her for 11 days, looking for her. And she's right in the bedroom," the woman's mother, Connie Weber, told the St Petersburg Times newspaper.
The family told the newspaper they had noticed a strange smell from her room but had blamed it on rats. They told the paper their daughter's light weight and petite frame may have contributed to her death. "She's a little thing," her mother reportedly said. "And the bookcase is 6ft tall and solid. And she couldn't get out."

I haven't watched any TV since arriving in LOS. And haven't missed it for a moment.

Depends nteh book, depends on what's on the television. Not to worry though I am not what you'd call "petite." Book case'll move for me.

Well, I am what you would call petite, and a lot older than that woman, but I can't imagine getting stuck like that and not being able to get yourself out.

Maybe she was pissed or something.

    this would have concerned me:

"The family told the newspaper they had noticed a strange smell from her room but had blamed it on rats."

had I been a relative or lived in the property...

With the amount of subtitled movies and programs I've been watching lately on tv here, I think I would say that I read a lot of tv.

    Conspiracy theory no. 12,763?

CIA did it? She stumbled onto plans to blahblahblah and was deemed "overdue at the library".

This should serve as a warning to all of those petite posters who go clambering over 6-foot bookcases in order to adjust plugs...

One thing I like about the television in LOS is that it doesn't appeal to me, which means I have no reason to buy a television and waste my time in front of it.

    Reading.

Those living in Pattaya at least have a decent cable TV service. I live in Bangsaen (although currently holidaying in Brisbane) and the cable TV there only offers one channel in English: Australia Network (which is the only reason I keep it!!)
My brother, who I'm staying with, has FOXTEL which is bloody great.

they don't have to be mutually exclusive. i like reading and i like tv. but rubbish books and rubbish tv are both a no-no, imho.

can't stand the intellectual snobbery that decrees that reading is a good thing but tv is a bad thing. i've been described as well-read but never as well-watched, despite spending time in front of the box.

Yeah, you've got a point, thaigirly. One thing I admit missing about not having a TV is not being able to watch DVDs.

I try to get the best of both. I usually read for at least an hour before going to sleep.

By the way, it's easy to spot the single guys/girls isn't it? What person with a Thai partner doesn't have a TV?

All at once or do you spread it out through the day?

I like TV and reading about equal really. What I miss is my DVR back in the U.S. Best invention of the past 5 years IMO.

Now I've seen the pic, she probably dropped a crumb of cake down the back of the bookcase which rolled out of reach. It was a small cake, so every crumb was vital. She got up on the bookcase and, well, the rest you know.

The reason no chocolate crumbs were found?

    Those pesky, smelly rats.

Mate, when she comes over we don't watch TV!

We play cards, for sure. A lot more fun than TV, which is an individual sport.
