It was nuts for them to even think of trying that spin - as if by saying they'd put it out of reach in possibly the most awkward way, that people would be gullible enough to shrug and accept it.

Why should he be ashamed? Unless you believe the whole thing is some sort of staged conspiracy, Obama has nothing to be ashamed of. As CinC of the military he is the only one who could give the order to embark on a mission fraught with all manner of risk based on intelligence gathered over a couple of years with no 100% assurance OBL was even in the building. Considering the domestic and international political fallout if the operation was unsuccessful, it was a gutsy call.
