As luck would have it, I worked with Brits for many years. I now understand why they lost their Empire...
^^Have to agree with your basic premise. Every time I go to the US, which fortunately is only for a week or two every three or four years, I am amazed at how provincial most Americans are. There is good reason for it, as the US is huge and very few Americans ever feel the need to venture outside of its borders - or for that matter, learn much about anything outside of its borders. Europe is obviously different, as it is a bunch of little postage stamp-sized countries stacked on top of each other. My wife, a Filipina, got tired of the "where are you from" crap, and used to switch up her answers - Lao, Khmer, Viet, Thai, Eskimo, etc. Nobody ever questioned her. It's actually pretty sad. The only people who really venture out of the US on a regular basis are the military - and they take the US with them.
Thats the point. What percentage of Americans have a passport? Very low mate. Because we have it all there, and that point is reinforced, and reinforced, and reinforced, till it becomes gospel. Geography used to be big in all American public schools, now its being phased back as it takes a "smarter" teacher. The same shit is going on all around the world. I feel lucky to be an older guy. My education was excellent. I was taught to be polite. Respect the elderly. These I have passed on to my kids as a few posters here know. I can only hope that others feel the need to not be a fucking dumbshit.Originally Posted by Little Chuchok
With all its faults I am damn proud to be a Yank, and even prouder that my kids born and raised here carry the same passport. They have both, but they know the one that for good or bad can open more doors.
^ yank to yank...christ what a bore.
schoolyard rule 3092b -- never respond shrilly to an obvious piss take. it only amuses the piss taker.
I totally agree 100% on passports. My parents and my brother still live within 30 miles of where we grew up. None have passports, None have left the US and yet they constantly brag how GREAT the US is...How ignorant is that....I laugh at them frequently from 8,000 miles away.
Anyway both my daughters have passports and both have taken International educational classes, 1 in France, 1 in Italy where our family hails from by family tree(actually family is from Sicily but you can ask 10 people where that is and 9 out of 10 do not know so I say Italy to avoid a geography lesson)
I agree AO, but you're an easy target to hit!
There are 50 states...and they are like 50 different countries. So many people don't move more than their surrounding states etc.
Most people I met were very nice....they just didn't know what was going on in the world.
It could be worse though...they could have been English.......
And bitching across multiple forums about being called a seppo has people going out of their way to call you a seppo, you seppo.
The State of Florida is about 450 miles in length. The distance from Paris to London is about half that. And Florida is but one state.
sorry. meant to refer to the whiny guy with the airplane av.
