Guilt factor: Xmas away from the family?

I have a 4 year old nephew. To my shame I have never met the kid

I promised him ealier this year (March) that I would be "home" to see him this Xmas. Unfortunately, in the meantime, 2 of the members of my team (out of 4) are having babies and won't be back at work till March 2007. Xmas is out.

I haven't seen my sister is nearly 6 years. Do you lot ever feel - well, guilty?

    It's a fact....

We live far away from our families - but our families also live far away from us.

    It takes two.

My niece doesn't remember who I am.

That's normal. I am so far away that I can only visit every year or two.

    Nothing to feel guilty about.

    2 things you can do:

    Visit them.

    Have them visit you.

It ain't easy, and it ain't cheap.

But that's the way it is.
    ............

obviously easier for one flight 'back home' than the whole family to visit here.

but william i know what you mean, it is hard. But also one thing i've learnt is try to always keep promises with kids! or dont make the promise! even if you only go home for a long weekend! seriously.

however, easy to say not always easy to do - i know.

first smart thing I've read today,

guilt was invented by the judeos
hen perfected by the christian demagogues
that further perfected the guilt sindrome
by introducing "confession" (a.k.a. 'I wanna know yer bizness' thingy)

Don't coddle the kiddies! Break promises often, gotta toughen them up for the real world, y'know.

iknow ur winding me up... but i'll reply anyway.

kids need some adults they can trust in life (this is not coddling)

if they have a few certain rocks to which they can depend they can then play the limit without going over it.
