Phukets Killer Beaches Versus Pattaya Condos

As deaths from both appear to be quite regular this could be a closely fought battle for which tourist destination has the most deaths, so we got 2 more months or more of Phuket summer season/death by drowning season so lets keep a count of which kills the most, pattaya condos or Phukets beaches.

A DESPERATE search was being conducted this afternoon for a tourist who went missing while swimming in the surf at Phuket's notoriously dangerous Karon beach. Off Karon beach, lifeguards using a jet-ski and a dinghy were looking for the man, one of three tourists from Bahrain in the Middle East who found themselves in difficulties in the water. Two of the men were pulled to safety on the shore and recovered after resuscitation was performed. The third man, however, is missing. The three Bahrain tourists were guests at the Patong Express Resort.

At Patong Hospital, doctors were frantically attempting to save the life of a tourist from China, who was pulled from the surf on a second incident at the neighboring Phuket beach of Kata.

A DESPERATE search was being conducted this afternoon for a tourist who went missing while swimming in the surf at Phuket's notoriously dangerous Karon beach.

At Patong Hospital, doctors were frantically attempting to save the life of a tourist from China, who was pulled from the surf on a second incident at the neighboring Phuket beach of Kata.

The incident took place off the beach from the Karon golden dragon statue.

A man from Romania drowned at this spot late last month. Survivors from the group of friends from Romania said they were not warned about the danger at their beachfront resort, the Karon Princess.

The three Bahrain tourists were guests at the Patong Express Resort. Patong, Karon and Kata are Phuket's three most popular west coast tourist destinations.

Drownings this monsoon season are following the pattern of previous monsoon seasons and can only accentuate calls for Karon beach - and possibly other beaches - to be closed on days when conditions are dangerous.

Lifeguards have said they are unable to patrol the whole length of the four-kilometre beach, so they need resorts to warn guests about the dangers of Karon.

A second incident occurred this afternoon at Kata beach, the next beach to Karon, where sources say a Chinese tourist was pulled from the water and is now being treated at Patong Hospital.

The Romanian man was pulled from the water at Karon alive but doctors were unable to save him. He was one of five deaths by drowning reported to Phuket's Public Health Department in July. Another five people were admitted to hospital, but recovered.

Phuketwan recently highlighted in an opinion article that a number of countries have issued travel alerts for Bangkok, where no tourists have been killed in this year's violence, yet tourists drown needlessly and too often at Karon beach and other Phuket beaches during the monsoon season.

It can only be a matter of time before countries begin to warn tourists about the dangers of Phuket's beaches during the monsoon season.

Yesterday, six Thai high school children were pulled to safety in a mass rescue at Phuket's southern Nai Harn beach. The first Phuket drowning of the year came on January 1 when a 10-year-old boy drowned at Nai Harn.

In 2009, there were 57 drownings in the waters of Phuket. This compares with the 153 deaths on Phuket's roads, highlighting the disproportionate danger in the water.

So far this year, there have been 25 drownings to the end of July. The 2009 figure included seven victims from a dive boat capsize.

    Update

ONE tourist has drowned and another tourist is missing in a day of tragedy at two of Phuket's most popular but treacherous beaches. The tourist from China, pulled from the water at Kata, died at Patong Hospital this afternoon with his wife at his bedside. Hope is fading that the other tourist, from Bahrain, lost off Karon beach, will be found alive.

No problem, it's Summer Season in Phuket Well I have read all the Pattaya news rags and not even a hint of a jumper this weekend, lets hope tomorrow brings better results for condo jumpers, so as it stands it's most likely 2 to 0 with Phuket rushing into the lead.

    Phuket drowning victim identified

3 nil to Phukets killer beaches this weekend, a grand score indeed for this summer season in Phuket.

    Phuket drowning victim identified

PHUKET: Police have identified the body of a man found washed up at Ao Yon over the weekend as that of Rawai resident Abdulloh Thaodaeng, aged 46.

Phuket City Police were notified that a body was discovered lying face up on Ao Yon beach in tambon Wichit at about 2:30am yesterday.

Police were initially unable to identify the corpse, clad only in a pair of blue underwear and wearing a gold ring and Seiko wristwatch. They noted some lacerations to the skin, but found no evidence of violence or foul play at the scene. They estimated the time of death at about six hours earlier.

The corpse was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further examination and to await identification by relatives.

Later the same day Mr Abdulloh’s relatives heard from friends that a body had washed up at Ao Yon.

Knowing that Mr Abdulloh had taken his boat out fishing the day before and had not returned, they went to Vachira Phuket, where they identified his remains.

Phuket City Police duty officer Kittiphum Thinthalang said police suspect Mr Abdulloh fell overboard and drowned in heavy surf.

His family have already claimed the body and will arrange funeral services in the Muslim tradition, Capt Kittiphum said.

The green season surf is so random and unpredicatble on Phuket. Not like regular aussie surf where there is a rythm and you can see the waves coming a mile off.

This is rice bunny happily splashing around near a rip at Surin beach yesterday (fully clothed of course). She cannot swim a stroke but is trying to learn in the hotel pool.

    Condo Jumpers

Just curious - are traditional jumpers, expats or Thais? I'm thinking about buying a condo, so I'm looking for a good deal, too.

    'drowning' questioned on Phuket

the "wife's uncaring attitude" make me suspicious - I've never heard of that before!

Mystery Phuket Death Troubles Man's Relatives

POLICE have yet to discount foul play in the death of a Phuket man whose body was found lying face up about 3pm yesterday at Khaokhad, an east-coast beach on Cape Panwa.

Family members say Abdulloh Thaodaeng, 45, was wealthy, owning three houses, and had a large number of life insurance policies. He was also the brother of the deputy mayor of Rawai.

Drowning is discounted by some members of the family, who want police to investigate the death thoroughly. Khun Abdulloh's wife appeared less than distraught at news that her husband was missing, heightening the concerns of other members of the family.

Police were continuing to question members of the family today.

Khun Abdulloh had a house at Ao Yon, a beach between Cape Panwa and Chalong, about four kilometers from where his body was found.

He had been missing since 8pm on Saturday. Relatives asked his wife, Mem, yesterday where her husband was. She said she did not know and added: ''Maybe he's drowned already.''

Doctors at Vachira Hospital suggested sending the body to Surat Thani for a full forensic autopsy but the family opted to prepare Khun Abdulloh instead for Muslim funeral rites as soon as possible.

Brother and Deputy Rawai Mayor Jirapong Thaodaeng said the couple had been married for five years, but his sister-in-law had never previously spent a night at the Ao Yon house until Saturday night.

Most of the other members of the family lived nearby. ''If my brother had drowned, his body would have been washed further away from Ao Yon by the prevailing current,'' he said.

''His skin did not have the appearance of someone who had drowned or even been in the water.

''There was only one mark on his body, on his head. If he had been in the water, the body would have been scraped.

''I do not want to make assumptions, but his wife's uncaring attitude has caused us to be alarmed.''

Khun Abdulloh was due to be buried at the local Muslim cemetery this afternoon.

Well seems Phukets killer beaches didn't kill anyone today and neither did Pattaya failed flying club get any new members, so still in the lead 3 to 0 is Phukets killer beaches, and just so we can keep tabs on how well the killer beaches in Phuket are doing here's the tallys again.

In 2009, there were 57 drownings in the waters of Phuket. This compares with the 153 deaths on Phuket's roads, highlighting the disproportionate danger in the water.

So far this year, there have been 25 drownings to the end of July. Local sources say there have been three drownings at Karon and one at Kata since lifeguards returned to the island's beaches in April.

Suicidal Italian Remarkably Survives 6-Storey Fall

no points for this one - jumper yes, but suicide no

    *******************

An Italian national has attempted suicide in Pattaya on Sunday. The man, suffering from a suspected mental condition, jumped off a 6-storey building in Naklua, surviving after landing on the roof of a neighbouring house.

Pattaya, the 15th of August 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 5:30pm on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Pratheep Thongdee (Pattaya Police Investigator) was notified of an attempted suicide involving a foreigner at the Thai U-dom Apartment in Soi Thai U-dom Naklua. A team of officers along with the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Foundation were dispatched to the incident to investigate.

At the scene, a 6-storey apartment block, police observed Mr. Daniele Buratti [34], an Italian national, sitting on the roof of a neighbouring house to the building. Mr. Daniele Buratti had allegedly jumped from the sixth floor of the Thai U-dom Apartment block in order to commit suicide. Apart from several cuts and bruises, Mr. Buratti was remarkably uninjured in the fall.

    "he went that way"

Managing to assist him from the roof, Mr. Buratti was immediately transported to the Banglamung Hospital for treatment on his numerous, relatively minor, injuries.

A witness to the incident, Mr. Wanrob Pansri [36], explained that he had seen Mr. Buratti throw his luggage off the roof of the apartment block before he calmly climbed over the concrete wall and jumped. Further investigations revealed that Mr. Buratti was not in fact a resident of the apartments and had never been seen in the building prior to Sunday’s events.

During the incident report process back at the Pattaya Police Station, it was found that Mr. Buratti had been involved in the theft of a bottle of water from a local 7-Eleven earlier in the day. He had been released by the store manager while in an extremely intoxicated state, claiming to have been robbed of all his money by a Beach Road working girl. Police only temporarily detained him before releasing him without charge.

Officers will continue with their investigations following Mr. Buratti’s release from the hospital. At present, police speculate that Mr. Buratti may be suffering from an unknown mental condition or bout of severe depression as a result of possible financial hardships.

Elderly British National Dies Swimming off Pattaya Beach
    October 10, 2010

An elderly British man has died while swimming in the Pattaya Bay on Saturday afternoon. The man, pulled from the water by fellow tourists, is thought to have died of natural causes.

Pattaya, the 9th of October 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 2:30pm on Saturday, Sawang Boriboon Foundation rescue services were notified of a foreign mans death in the Pattaya Bay, opposite Soi 13/2 (Soi Post Office).
The incident was immediately reported to Lieutenant Colonel Norawitch Jullawanit (Pattaya Police Investigator) who attended the scene to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Upon interviewing Mr. Bunjert Keanpirom [40], a local beach bed operator, officers found that the man, known only as Mr. Doug (70-80 years of age), was a regular customer of the beach bed operators and had rented a chair at approximately 2:00pm on Saturday.

According to Mr. Keanpirom’s statement, Mr. Doug had gone out for a swim in the sea shortly after renting the beach bed, before he observed a group of people carrying him into shore where he later died.

A witness to the incident, Mrs. Nisa Intarares [55], stated that she had known Mr. Doug for quite a while as they both spent considerable time relaxing along the Pattaya Beach. She explained that Mr. Doug would frequently visit the beach in the afternoon, often swam in the Pattaya Bay for short periods.

Along with minimal personal effects and information from Mrs. Intarares, officers ascertained that Mr. Doug was a British national and had been staying in a small hotel/guesthouse in Soi Buakow (South/Central Pattaya).

At present, officers speculate that Mr. Doug had died of natural causes while swimming in the sea. However, a post-mortem examination will be conducted. Police will now seek to identify his full name and personal details before informing the British Embassy of his passing.

I'd like to kill whomever taught all these Thais to write or their editor. Those kurt two- sentence paragraphs are hideous. At least they've toned down Sert's usually flowery descriptions..

" And as he drowned , the man , the last he saw, the Thailand sun setting... aglow ...the last gasp."
