Did Your Wife Take Your Name?

To those farang who have married Thai. When you got married did your wife change her name to your surname, ie. on ID card etc? Or did she keep her Thai family name?

    Why not?

Actually in Thailand amongst Thais obviously now most women keep their maiden name and keep "miss" on their ID card as the head officer told us or better my wife in the ampuer. I would be well pissed off.

They keep their maiden name so when you've bought the house, the land and the car they can fuck you off and get another stupid farang.

    Ermm no I'm not.
But if the new farang sees the name "Braithwaite" on an id card it sort of gives the game away.

She could change back to her maiden name after divorce.

My wife took my name, couldn't change it quick enough, think back in 2002 women had to take their husbands name, although i could be wrong on this.

The law did change around this time allowing women to keep their own names. I thought my wife might keep hers as doing so would have been a novelty.

She took my name. Was up to her, I didn't care either way. We live out in the boonies of Bkk so I was well impressed when the local registrar, or whatever the title would be here, recognized the name as being French and knew what it meant.

She got my name but I had previously added her surname to mine making mine
double-barrelled so as the nipper could retain both Thai and English surnames,
(it was important to her??? dont ask me)
Then she took most of the money

    mine too!
didn't take my name but she took everything else!!!

    seriously:

wtf is it about thai women who marry farang and keep their maiden names?
    more importantly:
why , if they are serious about the marriage, do they prefer to keep their maiden name?
this is NOT normal amongst thais, and any farang who hears any bullshit or who's "wife" won't take his name and change her name on her thai id doc. should chuck the worthless bitch out on the street.

    Hi Tsi,
I think it as simple as there was never a real relationship going on in the first place, thats how it was with me.

The woman's refusal to take the husbands name should be seen as a big warning sign that somthing is badly wrong in the relationship.
As rightly you say, this is not normal in Thai/Thai marriages.

It was only ever about money with my ex which is the reason she wanted to retain her name.

What drivel. Either you're married or you're not. Who the hell cares what name she chooses. You marry a woman not a damn name. If you're hung up on that crap, it would seem you have the problem.

    you missed my point.
perhaps things are different now (or not) that the law allows for it, but up to a short while ago, it was normal for a thai woman to take her husband's surname when they married.
    quite correct:
if it's just the name, then so bloody what?!!

point is that MANY thai women refused to change their id doc after marrying a farang (NOT after marrying a thai)
..........and their id doc then listed them as still being SINGLE/ not married/unmarried.

......and i question the motivation for them wanting it to be this way.

........and if your thai wife would rather be single than married to you, or is too embarrassed by the fact that she is married to you to want that fact to be known by anybody who sees her id doc., or comes up with some fukkn bullshit excuse about her not being able to own land if she is married to a farang:

    then DUMP THE BITCH!!!

    We'll do the same.

The nippers will have a double-barrel Thai and English first name too. They can choose which one they prefer when they're older.

That's another thing, when my misses was pregnant and we were thinking about names, i asked her if she wanted to choose a Thai name which i would have been more than happy with as i quite like the name Tittiporn myself or even a Thai middle name, but she was adamant she just wanted a farang name so i got my Mum to send me over one of those baby name books with about 2000 names in, i short listed about 10 and she chose Annabel out of my list and no middle name.
