Kinda, sorta, saved somebody's life today

I was home this afternoon in front of my computer and my beloved MiL who is about 74 as best as we can tell either slipped or fainted in the kitchen. I heard a sickening 'thud' and went running over.

She was on her back and twitching and making weird sort of sucking noises. Something I remembered from many years ago told me to clear her airway so I used a finger and dug down and hooked out her tongue that she had swallowed. After that I rolled her into the recovery position and then she took a deep breath and started breathing normally.

An ambulance was called and she is in the hospital tonight and the docs think she will be OK, well as far as a 74 yo lady will be. She's got a great big bump on her head (imagine half a golf ball size), but she was alert enough to thank me when I got to the hospital a couple of hours later.

The whole experience freaked me out. I think I was like 12 years old when I did my first first-aid training in the boy scouts or something and a couple more when I was working on ships. If she had taken the fall when our maid or neighbors were around she'd probably have choked to death on her tongue.

Not much point to my post, except to say that first-aid training can be good, even a bit saved a life today I think..

Well done, good the doctors thinks your Mil. will be OK, freaking out a bit in that situation is only natural, but you kept your head and did good and that is all that matters.

As you say the thing is, it's important to have some knowledge (in this case first aid) for the systems to fall back and concentrate on, not only can you help a victim but you are helping yourself as-well managing the events better during and maybe most importantly afterwards.

    Again well done mate.

Thanks dudes. <edit> and dudette! Thanks NR</edit>

I am not sure why I posted this thread really, I'm still a bit freaked out, but knowing that the MiL will live to fight another day is good.

I'm in the hospitality business by trade and I can handle stuff when it happens to other people but I'm not so good when it is so close to home.

You should be feeling pleased with yourself, have a cold beer, and have another on her next birthday.
    Well done sir.

it is amazing how some people are just able to react to a particular situation while other just stand back and watch. it was obvious that your training in your younger years had made an impression. given a slightly different circumstance, one that needed mouth to mouth resusciitation, I am sure you would have reacted in an appropriate manner.

in all seriousness though, be on the look out for headaches that the MIL may get as a result of hemmorhaging where the bump is.

    good effort!

    Nice one slackula... very commendable.

Many people might have had second thoughts about saving their MIL even if they did know what to do in the situation.

Can't say I would fancy having a feel of my MILs tongue but I'd like to think I would if the situation called for it.

    good onya slack

your training you recieved in the girl guides is still useful even if it is not the same as the latest technical theory. ( latest is 30 pumps and 2 breaths )

airway obstruction can be nothing more than an unconcious person with their chin on their chest - so a very small amount of assistance can make a big difference.
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Great job, Slack. Saving someones life deserves a big, big green in my book.

They say that a MiL's tongue is the most dangerous living creature on this planet so mate, displaying such bravery especially in the face of the enemy is truly phenomenal!!!

Well done.... your a good man... she'll love you forever

tis amazing by just having a little basic training in first aid how much it can make you aware and others benefit ... I've done similiar as part of HUET training (flying in choppers to / from offshore facilities) and would recommend everyone do such a coarse, hell they even show you how to us a fire extingusher correctly !!!!!

You'd be amazed how many peeps have know idea at all

On a more serious note: well done, mate. You are definitely right, a bit of first aid knowledge is very important. CPR, clearing airways etc . . . little things that can - and in your case 'do' - save lives
