    Where were you?

During every major political or world event people can remember where they were when the news broke. JFK's assassination, 9/11, or if you are old enough, the ending of a war. During this most recent Thailand coup, which was for many, a first, I can happily say I watched CNN from a bar stool with a cold beer for most of the day. This was without a doubt, one of the funniest coups I had the privilege to watch first hand. Where were you?

    Where was I?

    In bed.

I woke up the next day and saw the news.

    Will I remember this?

    No.

It's not really much news, anyway.

It's most certainly news if you are Thai or living long term in Thailand.
I'm interested to see what will happen to Taxin in the next couple of weeks.

kind of makes last weeks worries about visa runs and long term stays here a mute point now. just goes to show that worrying in Thailand is useless. The main reason I will remember this is because this was my wifes 1st coup.

You never know how you are going to react until you actually experience it.

I always liked to think that when the shells were flying, I would dig deep within myself and find that inner courage that enables one to remain calm and keep it all together while all around crumble under the pressure.

Well, I can now say I've been there. No, I didn't run for the borders or seek sanctuary within the confines of my embassy. I ventured out into the uncertainty, looked death in the face and said "Tiger beer sorng kwat, krap."

Those who haven't been through it will never understand...

I was practicing a new song when me old bro called from Finland wondering if I was out leapfrogging tanks. My initial reaction was a laugh. Still laughing.

I was surfing the Internet and saw William's post about the coup rumour. The rest is history.

But nothing much happened in Phuket - we're almost in a different country down here.

Much the same in CM, nothing, saw 2 military with guns at the airport plaza, but in the old city nothing. Today is business as usual, no change.

My missus was pissed off when her soap changed to old movies of HM The King. I figured something was afoot and turned to the BBC and saw the caption TANKS IN BANGKOK. But both the Beeb and Cnn were showing Kofi Annan drone on at the UN. The Beeb was the first to pull the plug on Kofi after about 10 frustrating minutes.

I'm usually in the sack sound asleep, but I stayed up that night with the laptop on the front porch reading all the posts that were made here.

Went in to the bedroom to use the desktop machine and was baffled by the fact that I couldn't get it to connect to the Internet. It took me a while to remember that I'd configured the router to cut that machine off at 10:30 PM each night to encourage the teenager to go to bed on time.

Here I'm thinking conspiracy and it was just me being stupid again.

Sat in a hotelroom in Hua Hin.
I assumed something was up when all state TV stations were showing the same stuff.

Yhis morning on the way back to Bangkok there was a significant military roadblock on either side of the road by the Samut Songkhran /Ratchaburi turn off about an hour or so out of Hua Hin.
All vehicles were briefly being stopped.

First one was like budhai 76 or 77 Kraingsak Chahoman or something. Shit I might have been here longer than I thought.

I thought it was military day. Oh to be a young traveler again.

This one was cool. With all the shit going on a nice muslim guy takes control. In the long run your gotta love Thailand.
