I seem to be one of the few here who will gladly admit I know nothing about Thai Politics but have gained some experience about working and living with a broad cross section of the Thai community.

All I know there is this mystical family of 54 that basically run this country, make all the decisions and they are mostly Chinese Thais.

A bit like those geezers that sit in the Hague and run the world so to speak.

All the other players we are seeing on TV at the moment have fvck all say at the end of the day.

There are three groups who share control of the country. They often compete but when, as now, they're threatened, they close ranks. These three groups are the wealthiest of the Chinese business families - the modern equivalent of the 19th Century Chao Seua (Tiger Lords), the nobility - who normally keep a low profile but are always highly active in the background, and the Military. They make up less than 1% of the population but will go to any lengths to hold on to their wealth and power. The "mystical family of 54" is a myth but a myth with some basis in reality.

IM (modest) O what we see is a battle by proxy among faction of these groups. If they were united as you say, the problem will have been solved long ago.

In Bangkok, there are may "reds" hiding in the closet. They can't oppose overtly the current regime but in secret ballot, they usually give their vote to Thaksin. It was actually quite a smart move from Thaksin to exclude members of the political establishment from the "red" leadership, Anand complained about it in his last interview, no agreement between "people of the same world" possible !
