The most shocking thing you've seen in Thailand?

So, what is the most shocking thing you've seen in Thailand?

You know, the sort of thing that just stops you dead in your tracks with a drop jawed look of disbelief on your face.

For me, it was something that I saw in the basement Disco at the Grace Hotel.

Several months ago a Saudi fellow I know called up and wanted to go out for a drink or ten. He was having troubles with his Thai wife and wanted someone to talk to. We jumped into a taxi and the next thing I knew we were walking into the Grace Hotel.

Most of you probably know the Grace Hotel's reputation, and I can pretty much confirm that the place does indeed live up to that reputation!

We started in the coffee shop. My initial impression was that this was where the mothers of all of the Sukhumvit working girls hung out. Shortly afterwards I was shocked and appalled when I realized that these overweight grandmothers were actually trolling for customers!

Then we went bowling. There are some differences between Farang and Arab bowling styles. Farangs rarely use an overhand throw in a bowling alley.

Finally we went to the disco. It was an amazing sight. In addition to a fair number of middle Eastern men, there were two or three Thai girls, several Iranian girls, some Arab girls and a small army of Uzbekistani girls! It was there, in the basement disco of the Grace Hotel that I saw the most shocking sight that I have ever seen in Thailand.

I had had a few beers and so I headed to the mens room. The bathroom attendant was sitting on the floor in the corner between the mens room and the womens room.

    SHE WAS READING A BOOK!!!

Not a cartoon book. Not a text book. A real live Thai book, possibly a novel.

If I had a time machine, I would go back there for a second look. Just to make sure that my eyes weren't deceiving me.

I once saw a small child on a motorcycle that had been provided with a helmet by it's guardian.

"Impossible" I hear you lot cry.

Yesterday I was coming down in an elevator. When we got to the ground floor, there were about 15 people waiting to get in. Then the most profoundly disturbing event took place which has shaken my faith in everything I have come to believe in.

The Thai people who were waiting to get in LET US OUT FIRST!
The truth is out there, but then I'm stuck in here.

I drove the length of Sukhumvit a few months back on the way to Bangkok, I hit every light on red, on every light - about six, a woman on a motorbike ran straight thru every set of lights with barely a glance at traffic, lights would go to green, I would overtake her, get to the next set of lights, and thru she would go!, and so on.
The problem for me was she was on the school run, and had four kids on the bike with her! Amazing indeed!

A long time ago, more years than I care to mention I went to the Rose Bar in Patpong.
It was one of those upstairs bars where you can ask for anything .

It was full of guys sitting down legs apart with a lady kneeling in front with their head bobbing up and down. After a few minutes each girl would walk to the toilet and then return for payment.

When I ventured into the toilet I found a huge 40 gallon oil drum that the girls where spitting the stuff into.

I saw a car that had hit a paint truck on the Bangkok to Pattaya road. The roof had been torn off and there were two people sitting upright covered in white paint. Both dead.

There was of course another 500 people standing in a circle doing nothing.

Another time I went to a national park and stayed the whole day. I was charged the normal Thai price and I noted that the park was clean and that there was not a single plastic bag blowing around in the wind.

    Stunning!

I was called "hey handsome, where are you going alone ? I come with you" in the streets while I was walking home quietly on Sukhumvit at 4am

Shocking and not bad looking I might add. I suspect however that she wasn't 100% kasher

If you believe (or listen to) the rumour, there's nothing out of the ordinary here where you are concerned

I know Thailand is a Buddhist nation believing in life after death, but did you expect him to get up and walk away?

For me, it was seeing this in Patong on December 28th, 2004:

I could've sworn the Superstar massage parlour was in the opposite direction.

Too many to mention, but the one that still cracks me up is when I went into Tesco Lotus for a phone topup.

    She: 300 or 500?
    Me: 500.
    She: No hab.
