Birthday party in ChiangMai, 26th. Feb

I've only been to Chiang Mai twice, for fleeting visits. I don't like cities too much, however....

On the 26 a good mate's got his birthday and we'll potter down to CM for his birthday. He'll be 73, I think.

Anyway I fancied the idea of taking he and his partner out for a bit of a surprise dinner in the evening.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers.

There's a bunch of good restaurants in CM. Maybe if you narrow in down a little bit (preferred cusine etc) I might be able to offer some suggestions? I presume that being a birthday and all you're looking for something a bit more 'special'?

    You presume right, Mate.

He lives about 15 minutes from the city center, so I believe. He/we like a drink so it'll be a taxi.

    Eat just about anything really.

In that case I'd probably recommend the Dhara Dhevi. There's about 5 restaurants in the complex (although not all are open on any given day so best to call ahead and check).

I often take customers there -- start with a few drinks in the Horn bar and then on to the Thai restaurant. They always seem to enjoy the food and performances and I really like the setting. Not as expensive as many seem to assume either in my opinion.

'The Dukes' is always good. As their slogan goes 'Created by a man who loves to eat, and eat, and eat...' just 100 meters up from The Riverside. Opened a second branch along the night bizarre just as I left, which I heard isn't as good. Never heard anything but great things about the main branch.

Riverside used to be my local a few years back. Good rockin' music, drinks, and food. Nice to dine under the palm trees along the river too.

Sorry JJ, thinking about your post I realise I've been hanging out in Thai restaurants for too long. I don't have any decent suggestions.

Lots of good restaurants in CM. Some of my favourites include:

    Leena Seafood (Anusarn Market)
    Good View (next to Riverside)
    Duke's (for western, good steaks)
Yoy's River Bar (west bank of the river, Wang Sing Kam Road, where Highway 11 crosses the river)
Antique House (just south of the Iron Bridge, on Chareoen Prathet Road)
Palad Tawan Rorn (on the mountain overlooking the city)
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

I've used all of them for a special night except Duke's, which is more of a regular lunch place for me. Too many Christian Missionaries generally, but good food.

Palad Tawan Ron was very memorable because one night we went there was a huge thunderstorm over the city and we were looking down on it. Good food, but the tables are a bit small and close together.

    ?????????????
