Meet the Thai cops

HOWARD MILLER (AGE 36)

Before Howard came to Thailand he had a variety of jobs including Licensee of a Pub in Southend and a nightclub in Corringham, Essex. He began his working life at the age of 18 when he left school after taking his A Levels. He worked for a French and then a German Bank in London and commuted from Southend every day.

Howard first went to Thailand in September 2002. He was persuaded to come and visit by a life-long friend, Ben Abrahams, who runs a Bar called Secrets located in Pattaya just off the main “Walking Street”. Initially, Howard only came out for a three week holiday but managed to find employment with a media company in 2007 and formed Pattaya One News and started a radio station, Pattaya 105 where he has a local show.

Howard began working for the Tourist Police back in 2002 and was the first operational foreign Tourist Police Assistant in Thailand. For 6 months he worked alone as the Police were apprehensive about asking further foreigners to join. After the 6 months he had proven his worth and the program was opened up to others.

Since then Howard has appeared on Thai National TV numerous times and has received numerous service awards for his work with the Thai police. He became Group Leader in 2006 and although it was only supposed to be for 2 years his colleagues voted for him to remain in the position indefinitely.

LOUISE ‘LOUBIE’ RAWLINGS (AGE: 49)

Louise is originally from Marske by the Sea, UK. She worked as a probate manager for a legal firm until she moved to Thailand when she was 38. She used to see people fighting over money from their deceased family members on a daily basis. This combined with the fact that both her parents died when they were 49 gave her the inspiration to live her life in a different way.

Louise had a connection with Thailand because her childhood friend was married to a Thai and living in Phuket so she moved there for a few months. She then decided to do some island hopping which is where she came across Koh Samui. Koh Samui had a lot to offer. There was nightlife and serenity. There were friendly people and a mixture of westerners and Thais. Everything seemed to fall into place. She found a house which she still lives in after 9 years. It is on the quieter side of the island, surrounded by coconut farms, water buffalo, birds, and orchids.
After being on Koh Samui for 5 years, since 2005, she saw an ad in the Samui Express about the new Tourist Police Recruits and that they were looking for volunteers. Louise felt this would be a way to give back to her Thai community and at the same time help people from her own home country and other westerners that were traveling through Koh Samui. Having been here already 5 years she could speak some Thai and knew a lot about cultural differences. Louise felt that helping people in this way would be the best use of her experiences in Thailand.
Louise called for an appointment and was greeted by several curious Thai officers and volunteers because they had never had a woman apply before! She met with the Captain and the Team Leader and they had to call the “big boss” to get approval for her as a woman. This took several weeks and finally she was notified that she could join. She had on the job training which is to say she was thrown into at the deep end. It is Louise’s English sense of humor combined with common sense and thinking like a woman that has served her well during her time in the volunteer program. And of course the Thais all love her bright red hair!
As cases came in she was called more and more to help out. She has been the major case worker when there is a rape on Samui, helping the victims through the ordeal of reporting to police, going to hospitals, and appearing in court. Most recently she worked relentlessly to successfully send a Thai man to jail for 5 years after he attacked and raped a 21 yr old Australian backpacker.
Louise has 4 dogs, a housemate, a 4WD truck for the rainy season and many visitors to her guest house every year to fill her time when she is not volunteering. This year she was voted Team Leader and loves every minute of being the only female team leader in Thailand despite it being a fairly demanding role!

No, I'm embarrassed by people who feel the need to bolster their egos by putting on a uniform and strutting around like a twat. As I haven't seen these guys in action, I'm having to guess that last bit but having seen the border-line psychotics (30 year old bed-wetters with a taste for extreme S&M porn who live with mum) who sign up to be community support police in England, I think it's a fair bet.

No comment on this Howard guy or this Louise chick, but the kind of quality guys I usually see as Tourist Police on Walking Street leaves a lot to be desired.

Would be more interesting if someone were to contact 'Bravo' or whatever the uk channel is called and ask them if they are aware of Howards sexual preferences.

I thought that the tourist police were just a convenient way of giving the real police easy access to bigger bribes.

Little Johnny get caught doing something in Pattaya he shouldn't and everyone agrees that a good bung would be 100.000 baht about 4 grand English. Of course Johnny's only got a grand left, or less. So in steps nice tourist policeman and suggests that Daddy in England pay or Johnny goes to the Hilton tommorow.
All daddy has to do is put it in the policemans English bank account, and as soon as nice policeman can see the deposit on the internet Johnny goes home. Or the police only get what Johnny has left or nothing.

They can't be any worse than the majority of the real bent cops back home in the US and UK.

I reckon Tourist Police volunteeers are a lot like mods on a forum; the kind of person that wants to do it is exactly the worng kind of person to be doing it.

I wonder what all the knockers of these people do to put something back into the community? so easy to point a finger and laugh at people volunteering from people hiding behind a keyboard with anonymous nics. They aint perfect examples of human kind, but at least they are trying to make a difference, what difference do all the smart arsed cynics make??

The real Police are too busy collecting tea money and watching telly to be bothered with unimportant people like tourists, so why not get other falangs to do their work for nowt, pretty cunning these Thai's.
