    Thumbs down Redundant Jobs

I was just watching a spot on the BBCs formula one coverage where they did an in depth coverage of refuelling. The refueller explained the interlocks, timings etc and how the angle and position of the filler was tailored specifically to suit his height and reach to facilitate quick filling. It was quite fascinating but they then concluded by saying that of course refuelling was banned next season

I can just see the guy writing his CV at the end of the year.

This leads me on to the question of what skill do you have or know of that has become totally redundant?

How about being a TEFLer in Malaysia, it seems to be hard on the sanity.

The relocation of machine manufacturing facilities to China and India has made so many western technicians and trades people jobs redundant it is not funny anymore.

Now you find that not only are the machines being manufactured in Asia but the finished product as well and places like Australia are going to suffer with a large sector of the working population without the chance of a job.

I've reached a high level of proficiency in a couple of areas of obscure computer technology over the years only to have it disappear as technology moves on. One example is writing reports on an IBM mainframe using DCF (Document Composition Facility) before PCs and wysiwyg word processors became common. It was a bit like HTML in structure.

SNA was another, beforeTCP/IP took over the world.

I also recall the next two offices to mine were the comptometer operators, 30 people adding up numbers with a semi mechanical calculator, and the Drawing Office, another 25 people producing accurate scale drawings from the design offices rough drafts, all replaced by computers now, as is the typists pool.

Don't think the fact that I can pretty much diagnose distemper or mange at a glance & know the treatment regimes is going to help me much in UK, either, somehow. Not a lot of either disease there.

Being a citizen of a Western country. It's a useless reality nowadays. There really is little reason to have citizenship unless you were born abroad. You have more opportunity as a foreigner turned citizen in this gloablized world.

    Mailmen

    VCR repairmen

    Some newspaper people

designers and architects in western countries - all done for nothing in India

Ski Instructors - if global warming ruins the snows of winter

Pornostars - too much competition to make a living like they used to.

(ok, it's not that funny, I'm just a sad old computer geek )
