Whats in a name ? Placenames.

When you first arrive here everywhere sounds kind of exotic and arouses the curiosity . Before long you get to know what the placename actually means and it all sounds a bit more mundane as if the person who first named the place was low on imagination and liked to call a spade a spade. Then it sounds as if you're in the outback or Midwest. Examples :

    Nah Glua ........ Salt Field
    DinDeng ......... Red Earth
    Pla Bahk ........ Fish Mouth
    Seechompu .... Pink .... ( A gay kinda place ? )
Prayuen ........ Standing Monk ( Standing one eyed monk would be interesting)Maeprik ....... Mother chilli.

And so on. Do you know where you live or have you spotted any weird placenames in your travels ? I would like to believe that somewhere out there is a little village with the picturesque name of LookhamKwai ....Buffalo's Bollocks.

Just off Phuket Island there is a sign to Bang Ben Beach !
As my housekeeper at the time was called Ben she was extremely embarrased when I explained why I laughed as we drove by !!

    She was a lovely lady - over 70 !!!

Bang Sue on the underground springs to mind. Obviously,a long time ago, the village bike was a girl named Sue. From this I now see that where I live means a ' Big Shag ' .......nah , couldn't be that simple

I've always wondered why the city Had Yai is called that. Does it actually mean "big beach"? Not sure why, as the ocean is about 60km away.

I once had a room in Pattaya in a Soi Thai Hee but it was spelt with the wrong H which kind of spoiled the accuracy of the name.

Mother crops up in a lot of village names :

    Mae Tia............... short mum
Mae Den ............. dancing mum ( been at the Leo )
Mae Ngow ........... lonely mum ( might be worth a visit )
    Mae Wahn ......... sweet mum

Dads don't get a look in so mums the word. Food does o.k. though:

    Bobea ....... Spring roll
    Dtengmo ...... Watermelon

And maybe Ekkamai was named after a lost Englishman found wandering around muttering " Where the Ekkamai " ? .............maybe not.

You may see sometimes the spelling: HAAD YAI, meaning the short version of "Ma Hat Yai", meaning big Ma Hat (มะหาด) tree.
No Beach here - 26 km down in Songkhla is the next one!

There's a well known Chinese restaurant in Soho named Wong Kee.....which would be circle of shit in Thai.
