Americans get to watch their dead heroes being brought back

Military mortuary open to media for first time since 1991

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- For the first time since media coverage was banned in 1991, the return of the body of a fallen member of the U.S. armed forces was opened to news outlets late Sunday.
A transport plane carries caskets of U.S. servicemen in this photo the Pentagon released in 2005.

The U.S. Air Force informed media on Sunday that the family of Staff Sgt. Phillip Myers consented to allowing coverage of his casket being returned to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Myers, 30, of Hopewell, Virginia, was a member of an engineering unit based in Britain.

He died Saturday in a roadside bombing in southern Afghanistan, the U.S. military reported.

In February, President Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates overturned a policy that dated back to the first Persian Gulf war.

They agreed to allow reporters to observe the remains of American troops being returned to the U.S. military mortuary at Dover, as long as families agreed.

The policy was supposed to take effect on Monday, and no reason was given why reporters were allowed to view the proceedings on Sunday.

    ^ Agreed.

    Also this:

    as long as families agreed
Heroes? Just because they're dead? Ummmm -- don't think so. Wouldn't it be prudent to learn that he did something heroic before referring to him as a hero?

Geez, DD, sometimes you sound so -- American.

I don't care about the photos.

It's the censorship that is a crock.

Families agree? There are NO NAMES on the photos correct?

    The families don't even know.

gotta agree with that. They call anyone a hero nowadays, if they died in Iraq or Afghani, but most of them are just doing a job and not in the line of fire. Then they get it with a suicide bomb, or a roadside one

Well, a more honest title would be to replace the word "Heroes" with "Idiots", but I felt that you Americans would prefer me to call these idiots heroes

    Not "heroes," that's for sure.

    "Idiots?" some, are.

    "Sheep" most are, IMO.

^^ Ahh, but a picture says more than a thousand words. Something our heroes in the White House (is it still?) really didn't want to expose the world-wise American public to, for obvious reasons.

A picture is worth a 1,000 words, let the people see the flag wrapped coffins and decide for them selves whether an illegal invasion of a soveriegn nation which has fok all is worth it.

^ I think the US should have waited for the UN to act against Saddam's 15 or more refusals to comply with their mandates.

I am sure they would have handled it sooner or later.

The truth is the US did the UN's dirty work as they have NO BALLS.

Really not a fucking thing, no more than the US excuse that the krauts sunk the liner Lucetania as an excuse to jump in and save England durinh the first world war.
Or the excuse that the Japs bombed Peark Harbor to come to Englands aid in the second worls war.
Does those excuses mean anything to you?

Are you trying to compare the illegal Iraqi invasion with the German march across Europe BG?

    I think you are.

You make some good points, BG (Though I don't think Japan used coming to England's aid as an excuse)

I fail to see why returning dead soldiers has been hidden . . . doesn't that fly in the face of having respect and appreciating the lives they put down?

A brit talking negatively about the illegal invasion of a foreign nation, whats the world coming to? I do however feel that the US should not follow in their example.

Public opinion should change. It would be much cheaper in lives, as well as money, to let Europe deal with it. Europe will have its hands full, once the US stops distracting all these terrorists.

I do believe that the US has decided that a war for oil, umm against terrorism, is their raison d'etre . . . Europe has little to do with this ideology.

You do remember why the US invaded Iraq? The Osama bin Laden bogeyman as an excuse to test all those shiny new weapons and enrich the koffers of the military-industrial complex.
