Why so many bloody Brits in Thailand?

There seems to be a dominant Brit presence on this forum. I also noticed when I lived in Thailand for a few months, that there was so many British expats. Is it just me are there more Brits (is that insulting?) than other nationalities? Is it as simple as the fact that, Britain is closer than America or Canada?

In Korea, there are many Canadian, and American expats. There aren't as many British and South African expats, but the numbers are growing.

    Down with the Brits !

You been to the UK lately, PB?
The word is that the Brits overstayed their welcome (and trashed the local scene) in Spain, so they started going to Thailand. Cheaper, too. Don't know why they want to go somewhere else. Most of them either build an English pub or eat and drink at one, watch footie, read English tabloids, and complain about everything.

But they do that in the UK anyway, it's a 'Great British' trait. Doesn't matter where in the world you are, you will find 'em in every nook and cranny.

    I am a Brit, but I wouldn't say a typical Brit in the sense that I don't moan about everything, I don't read English daily's and I don't eat/drink in British Pubs.

    P.S. Never been to Spain!

Actually, Poms have had their way {in numbers} in The Fairyland Kingdom for a number of decades - not just visitors, but long-time resident types. Seems to be the place. Historically {compared to other like Western people}, you'll find that the British are prolific overseas travellers and residents alike worldwide. Not a corner in the world left unturned where you'll run into a Brit. This tradition goes way way back.....

If you came from a small, crowded little country with eternally grey skies, you too would think about going some place else.

Yeah, that's me all right. Bloody hell you two have analysed me (as a typical Brit) perfectly.

    Cheers.

Do you know, I've never once said 'down with' anyone. I've never generalised about a nationality, believing that there are good and bad examples of every nationality. Maybe I should start generalising and picking on people for no other reason than where they were born. Seems to be quite a fashion on here.

Phuketbound is just a bit pissy because the Brits on here reckoned she was a bit of a Chubber.

Only Paki is insulting. Every other condensed nationality is OK.

Most Brits I know contribute fairly and squarely and to the place that they make their home, just like every race of people!

It's just the rowdy, selfish few that seem to cruel it for everyone else.

I met a few Aussie guys last night in Soi 33 in Bangkok and they were acting in a manner not only denigrating Aussies but farangs in general.

I had a harsh word with one of them when he tried to stick his pool cue in some poor girls crutch and whilst she was demonstrating.

Fooking filthy coont then sent me over a Bunderberg rum concoction and I left it sitting on the bar.

I told him he didn't have to apologize to me.............. better say sorry to the girl. Thick twat!

    because it isn't.

    the adjective is Pakistani.

Paki was traditionally used as an insulting term towards anyone from the region, regardless of wether they were from Sri Lanka, india or Pakistan.

i have never liked the term and will never use it...... too many connotations.

The Paki term is considered racist as all the Indians in the UK were called Pakis and Indians consider Pakis to be the lowest scum on earth, nought to do with Pakistanis I reckon

Never NR. You are of course unique. Being British and intelligent has it's advantages.
PB is getting a hard on because some nasty Brit attacked a few of her ill considered postings.

. Don't know why they want to go somewhere else. Most of them either build an English pub or eat and drink at one, watch footie, read English tabloids, and complain about everything
Not like you to resort to stereotypes Jet?

The Brits who settled in spain were mostly retirees, and now their retirement income is earning zero interest they are heading home in droves.

I am a Brit, but I wouldn't say a typical Brit in the sense that I don't moan about everything
Are you sure about that filch?

I think Korea has more American expats because they have a connection with Korea militarily and economically.

    Down with Brits.
Let me think about that one. Do you mean all Brits, or just expats, or just expat Brits in Thailand?
If you are truly Phuket bound, i expect you will find answers to many of your issues with the British.
If you get bored with the Brit expat community you could always hit on the Americans or the Australians. Don't forget PB your ancesters were probably european, so why not have a go at them as well.
    Good hunting

The real answer to your question is that we are all depraved and like the nice weather and low cost of living. (Mostly)

Many middle-class youths in England take a gap year and travel and Thailand is seen as a fairly adventurous yet safe choice.

There are fucking tons of English here (not so sure about the others) and I can't really deny that they're by and large a pretty gruesome lot. But then the English are by and large a gruesome lot and the best and brightest are unlikely to end up in Thailand, so it's not that surprising.
