Of course you can get by on 40,000, even in Bangkok...and in better than the digs you describe.

But with the inability to save much of any consequence and the likelihood you have to drop some standards if you enjoy a going out, it is nevertheless just "getting by"...

Sure you can get by on 40K, you can get by on less if you really try hard.

Then again it's never been my idea to come and live like an expat on a tight budget.

Even out of BKK, you still need 40 to 50K if you wanna have a good time.

Of course some of us are happy to live in a room.
ALways found it a bit odd? Why would a grown man want to live in a small shitty room?
Coz he prefers spending the bit TEFL money he makes on beer and whores.

I know you can get by on 40,000 because i got by on less when I lived in bangkok 5 years ago. I lived in a nice apartment with a nice pool, had UBC and internet access. The worst month i had 2 baht left to my name at the end of the month and usually spent nearly everything, but it wasn't a bad life at all. I used to sit at my pool that hardly anone ever used thinking that people would pay a lot of money to come oin holiday to do what i was being paid, allbeit minimally, to do.

I know several people that do..BM.
1,000 baht a day is perfectly liveable on, if you have to.

Sure everything is possible. What about the rainy days though?
I wouldn't wanna live here if I had to rely solely on a teacher's salary.

    Likewise likewise.
I think people without a little behind them don't last so long, just making the point that for a year or 2 and sometimes longer, it's perfectly plausible.

It is also best not to have a whoring habit or to be female.

    Agreed.

On 40,000 it is very difficult to go home once a year, even in economy class. And I wouldn't consider living overseas without the resources to go home now and then is being a particularly pleasant lifestyle, even if all else is OK.

    I was thinking the same.

I usually spend the money going somewhere nice, rather than wasting it on a trip back to the UK.

    CMN & MtD...

I do not so much mean whether you actually do or don't go home...more talking about the peace of mind you know you could if you wanted to.

I suppose I am saying I think living on 40,000 is virtually living hand to mouth in Thailand. You might be able to live OK here, perhaps even save a few baht...but it doesn't go far if you have to leave Thai borders.

I usually spend the money going somewhere nice, rather than wasting it on a trip back to the UK.
My point is, spend what money?

I'm currently planning a couple of weeks in Nepal in October. Airfares alone are 20,000. I imagine living in reasonable comfort I will spend another 40,000 on food, drink, treks and accommodation.

That's a month and half pay at 40,000. How many living in Bangkok in any reasonable style on 40,000 can put that aside?

Once I move back, I'm not leaving to 'go home' ever again as I'm making Thailand my permanent home. There's nothing back in the states I'll be craving...

Piss off! Anyway, what are you going to wear on Saturday? I was thinking of something black and timeless.

Probably true. There's loads of ignorant rednecks here, too.

I'm not so sure it's sufficiently enjoyable as a hobby SK.
    Personally, I prefer golf.

i love the caddies at the golf courses up here.
they can't speak a word of english and i am happy to pay them a decent tip for the 4 hour conversational thai lesson they have given me.

they will also run ahead to the next bar along the course to but you a bottle, if you find you can't wait for a beer.
