A WOMAN was fighting for her life last night after suffering a drug overdose when heroin packed in condoms seeped into her stomach.
She is believed to have swallowed the drugs in Vietnam and borded a flight to Sydney, the
NT News reports.
Her husband is also suspected of smuggling heroin in his stomach.
The Sydney-bound plane was diverted to Alice Springs Airport early yesterday after the 45-year-old woman collapsed on board.
Australia Federal Police officers were at the town's hospital last night interviewing the woman's husband.
St John’s ambulance deputy operations manager Peter Monks said paramedics were called to an emergency at the airport at 6.23am and arrived as the Air Vietnam Boeing 777 landed 20 minutes later.
He said the woman was unconscious onboard.
"She was stabilised by emergency paramedics and taken to hospital," Mr Monks said.
The woman's condition got worse after she arrived at hospital and she is believed to have undergone surgery to remove the condoms yesterday afternoon.
Hospital spokeswoman Chelsea Rogers said: "She remains in a serious but stable condition."
The Australian Federal Police said it was still investigating and could not comment.
