    How's your Halloween going?

Today I bought some tom yum goong which - you gotta hand it to the Thais - is a great soup, though hard work to get through a bowl but it's medicinal innit. Anyway, through the rain I spotted a woman in a silly rubber mask and a local shop had sprayed a melon with orange paint and drawn a face on it with a marker, and it was then that I realized that tonight I should perhaps be shaking my booty down at the Witches Tavern instead of browsing the UK headlines, scratching my ankles and batting one off to photos of Mila Kunis.

I hate halloween. loads of kids coming knocking on your door for sweets when all they have done is get a £1 mask from Tesco and put it on. If you want sweets get your parents to buy them and stop making me stand up and answer the door every half an hour or so and let the cold air in whilst i give a fake smile about how scary you all look.

i went to the dentist because my gums had been bleeding for the past week. I had 3 fillings and was told I have periodontal disease and need to spend $400 to get my gums 'deep cleaned' or else my teeth will all fall out.

Apart from that it was pretty good

Halloween just seems a little bit pathetic to me, and there's nothing scary about black balloons and cheap make up... BUt they Thais love it, they have no idea of its origins but to them its a perfect opportunity to whiten their face and pretend they know whats going on.

Wikipedia says that traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient Celtic pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the living and the deceased dissolved, and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires, into which bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.

Sounds very silly to me but I suppose that back then we believed the moon was made of cheese and an intelligent woman was drowned for fear of being a witch. The only reason it is continued now is because it's a great opportunity to make money and sell pumpkins.

I would appreciate it more if I had children, having said that if I had been out and about in downtown Bangkok I'm sure the sight of good looking Thai strumpets with back combed hair, black torn tights, crimson lipstick and Siouxsie Sioux eye shadow would have made it worthwhile.

^ Nottingham? ...Were the male zombies outnumbered by females?

Okay, if you're gonna dress up for Halloween you may as well do it properly. Something like this would have impressed me as a child.

In 1992 I dressed up for Halloween before going to work in my local pub.. I spent just under four hours in make up which I had bought in London from a professional supplier and I actually managed to convince some of the dimmer beer drinkers that I had accidentally put my head into a deep fat fryer.

    Those were the days.

I put on Beowulf which scared the living crap out of my girlfriend who proceeded to give me the silent treatment once I had realized she didn't particularly enjoy watching animated vikings get impaled on the walls and have their limbs torn off by a retarded monster.

Get this picture framed and put it on the wall opposite the bed you share... Tell he if it is removed it will bring bad luck or even death.

By eight o'clock, the streets were alive with small groups of little kids and the occasional chaperone. Witches, warlocks and the odd zombie, knocking on doors, collecting sweeties and scampering off to the next house. By eight thirty it was all over. No one knocked on our door, so I spent the rest of the evening munching on a tin of 'old bones' and chatting to a friend who's going through a divorce. That was scarery enough.

I stayed in for Halloween. Not much going on for Halloween where I'm at.

Me don't care much. I did like going to halloween parties as an adult in the mid 90s. It was fun.

I went down the pub for a few pints. There were three skanky nurses in the house. There was clearly some misunderstanding there, as it was Halloween and not porn shooting.

And then there were two massive pandas walking in....

Had a good night laughing at people.

Used to love Hallowe'en & Bonfire Night as a kid, as my birthday is between the two & I'd always have a party for one or the other (whichever was nearest to a weekend). Now, nothing. It's easy to forget about Western festivals living here. I'm sure I could even forget Christmas, given the chance

^ Yep. Pray for the pagan bashers.

I spent Halloween in a shopping mall in Cebu.

Literally hundreds of little Filipino kids in mobs storming into shops where candy was being dished out. Chaos.

A westerner could have quite a good time living in the Philippines - not Manila, still an unpleasant place, but in a provincial city. The women there are far better looking than the Filipinas who migrate overseas as domestic helpers. Some of the Cebuanas are remarkable and of course the language barrier is lower.
