A SEEMINGLY respectable Tyneside businessman is facing jail after setting up a brothel with his Thai mistress.
Wealthy management consultant Stephen Hodgkiss, 44, who lives in Jesmond, Newcastle, funded the County Durham sex den for his partner Waraporn Dodds who sent the profits back to her family in Thailand.
Dodds, 38, who lives with Hodgkiss in a flat on Jesmond’s St George’s Terrace took all the money her girls made legitimately by selling massages, but told them they could make cash for themselves by providing “extras” for customers”.
The couple’s sordid double-life was revealed when they both pleaded guilty at Teesside Crown Court to keeping a brothel.
Today neighbours in the street in Jesmond said they had no idea what their neighbours had been up to.
One neighbour, a man who did not want to be named, said: “I thought they were a totally respectable couple. The only thing unusual is that he is a middle-aged white man living with a younger Thai woman. But I just thought he must have done the internet thing and brought a Thai bride.”
The court heard how computer expert Hodgkiss, who earns £80,000-a-year lived, with Dodds but had a wife in Thailand.
It was said that Dodds sent the money she made from the brothel, on Major Street, Darlington, to her parents, in Thailand, who care for her and Hodgkiss’ child.
Meanwhile her lover sent the profits he made to his wife in south-east Asia.
They opened the Darlington premises soon after a massage-parlour run by Dodds in Shortridge Terrace, Jesmond, was closed after it was raided by police in August 2005.
By May 2006 Dodds was asking her partner to acquire a property in Darlington.
But the couple were caught out when police raided their vice-den in February and discovered it had been operating as an illegal brothel since they took over the tenancy in June 2006. An investigation revealed that Hodgkiss had rented the property in his name, furnished it, and advertised “services” in a national newspaper.
Within three weeks of taking on the property the businessman had placed a bulk order with a company called Condom Tom and bought more supplies in September.
Girls at the sex-den offered punters a 40-minute massage for £25.
Hodgkiss claims he initially thought his partner was setting up a massage parlour but accepts he eventually became aware that it was a brothel.
Judge Christopher Prince released the couple on bail.
But he warned them that they were facing jail.
He said: “That should not be taken as an indication of the sentence that will be imposed.”
Tom Moran, defending, Hodgkiss said it was accepted that Hodgkiss paid for the premises in Darlington but insisted that he had no financial stake in the business and did not profit from it.
