    Gun Law

Anyone know what the current law is about shooting trespassers?
In the past few months, many properties where we live have been robbed - they come at night, stealing pumps and whatever they can carry.
Our house is a bit out of the way, we have no telephones, only mobiles, the whole village is without a telephone link.
Previously, we have had sphinctoids coming inside the land at night, mostly harmless reptiles looking for insects to digest.
However, the current gun I have ( the standard thai pump up -whilst capable of taking out a retard, cannot be reloaded quickly - hence the fear of retard overload)
We are in the process of applying for a 12 bore shotgun permit, to exterminate vermin LOL and protection plus a second application for a pistol (.45mm)
The police are a bit vague about when this can be used, anyone know if it is OK to shoot thieves? or do they actually have to enter the house/ living area?
We have an open area downstairs, which, could technically described as part of the house, but not enclosed, we keep a car, mower tools etc. here.
Would I be in my rights to shoot someone if they came here? or do I need to wait until they have slashed the wifes throat, kidnapped the kid and pillaged the upper floor?
    Cheers!

As long as you shoot them on your property you're ok. To cut a long story short. I got burgled twice. A friendly cop gave me a gun, no paperwork, if you know what I mean. I asked him "if I shot someone with an illegal gun, what would happen ?" He said don't worry as 1500 Baht will sort it ". I never took the gun but my wife does now own one legally.

If you are a foreigner, I would say no. Law seems to be interpreted here and unless you have the right connections out in the village you may end up in jail for protecting yourself.

Get a dog. At least that way they cannot hold you responsible if someone gets attacked by the dog for trespassing.

^ Sorry, I know how serious an issue it is. But, booby traps can be very effective. Especially if they involve 240 volts mains power.

I do that as well. I got some copper wire connected it to a socket and then zig zag it around a room waiste height. Couple of times I've forgot about setting it but I've now clicked.

In Sudan we ran it along the tops of the perimeter walls. Plugged it in at night and sat back to watch things fry. No more human intruders after that. In fact, after a few days we never turned it on again. The point had been made.

As long as the wire is suspended the rain will have no effect of it as pure water is not conductive..

Right, but mud and wet feet will make good ground for who ever is touching the bare wire.

Exactly, we were sitting on deckchairs on a concrete patio, NOT drinking hooch or smoking, just watching. Safe as.

If, by chance, you were a bare footed person who decided you'd like to peer ove our wall, good on ya.

Did I mention the hose pipe water pistols we made?

    Harsh but fair.

I'd also like to add a question to this, if i shot an intruder what would be the likely outcome and if the Mrs shot them instead what is likely to happen to her?

she shoots - she misses --no worries

you shoot - you hit -- deep shit

She shoots - she hits -- no worries, other than financial

You shoot - you miss -- hmmm maybe financial

My wife, who wants a gun, sai an interesting thing.

"You kill, you pay one time. Finish."
"You no kill but make sick you pay long time, long time."
"You no make people sick, expensive. You kill, cheap."

100% serious and an honest translation of what she said.

sorry cant contribute about los gun laws because as we know they vary according to the conditions like who did what and is worth how much, but do make sure to fire your second shot in the air.

for cost effectiveness try supplementing with strategically located wind chimes even if there's no breeze in the dead of night, or invest in some guinea fowl, since they squawk like fcuk if disturbed...also lots of other nonviolent tech stuff like sensors, which are cheap enough and not easy to overcome, the important thing being to create noise and lights, which intruders do not like...these and copper wire may be effective but can't see anything not visible from the outside as a deterrent because they'll be discovered only after an intrusion is attempted or has already occurred...effective deterrents should let intruders know what to expect and that it's unpleasant, which is balanced by removing the surprise factor...window bars may keep others out but consider also that they keep you in, so there should be an emergency release.

ivor, if you have guard dogs it's important to train them early on not to eat any food they find, and also not to accept food from anyone except yourself and family.

good luck people, it's us vs the scum.

btw am now paranoid and have again switched on the outside lights that mrs keeps turning off to save electrikery.

the old copper wire works well. OK It's not very p.c. but it works.
As soon as the locals see a couple of pigeons, cats, or sparrows fried they're not oging to go near the wall.

never mind pc...consider the 911 call by an hysterical woman screaming that there's been an explosion and she can't breathe because the place is filled with smoke, so is it ok if she tries to break a window to get some air...!

Thanks for the advice, the elctricity sounds worth a look! How do you wire it up so it doesn't fry your supply, nor trips rcbs etc.?
I already have two dogs, but as already mentioned, they poson them here first too.
Plus the dogs are useless, OK they bark but would run like hell if anyone picked up a stick or a stone.
I got a youngster too, so I wouldn't want him EATEN!
Night time we put a long plank across the roadway, with protruding nails, that will keep out or puncture any tyres on any cars that try and get in.
But these bastards are getting devious - they are building a new road near me and now cars can sneak down there at night then cut across the deserted land and get into peoples property.
The guy who has some farm land next to me has left a large pump and a trailer there for over 15 years, never a problem - now - gone!
I agree about making sure that you KILL them, not injure - my wife says the same thing, you wond them and you pay forever, finish the job and that could only mean a one off payment if at all!
Plus, the other benefit is, they are not going to come back again, looking for "revenge!"

^^ I thought you lived in the land of smiles? Where could you possibly live and why are you so paranoid? Did you have a serious incident or is it happening on a nightly basis?

We live out in the sticks a bit about 40k S/W of Chiang Mai.
Things are getting worse around here, (it's a small village - was a good community) but as expected the poverty here is biting.
Locals are being robbed of gold chains etc. in broad daylight, houses are being robbed during the day, when normally you could leave your door open.

Most of the villagers live almost on top of each other, so if there was a problem at night, they can all get in on it.

We are about 500m from the nearest house in our village - no street lights, no telephones, no police station for about 6km, and to the back of my land and to the other side there is nothing but orchards and a road under construction for about 3km.

It is also (wrongly in my case) thought that ALL falangs are multi millionaires, and, given the opportunity of getting cash as a burglar, I know where I would take a bet - risk waking the entire village to maybe rob a pump, or take a chance on getting millions from the falang who lives way out on his own.

And, having to risk crawling through his "ghost ridden" property -( that is one of the things that I think keeps them out a lot of the times - they are shit scared of the trees here, even in the daytime - believe they are hauned) They would probably carry some form of weapon - I know I would!

So it is just as a last resort, I would even consider a good loud gun that fired blanks, the effect would probably be enough to do the trick, however, I have never heard or seen them for sale.

Starter pistol ? I'd imagine any good sports shop would sell them.
