I have two friends married to Thai birds. Both of them say that they rank about 5th in her life priorities.

If Iam ever unfortunate enough to fall for one of these local types, I imagine that I'll ask her to sign a contract stating "We are marrying, will be living together for the rest of our lives and raising a family, and I promise that you ARE more important to me than my parents and siblings, and I will not put them before you."

Smeg, I have been to 3 weddings in my wifes village.
2 were all Thai, the other was mine.

The other 2 weddings saw 100,000 baht covering the tables.
Mine did not.

Don't consider the sinsot to be necessarily the farang being ripped off. both wife and family understood my reasons for not wanting to do it.

I do not think you do.
When parents want to marry their girl, they would like to make sure the husband can take care of her (and them when they get older).
In the N/NE, most people are poor or very poor, so putting money on the table when you do not have any, or little, means you care about the wife and the wife's parents and won't give up easily on the marriage.
If the parents know you have money and will take care of their daughter, it does not matter, it is just keeping traditions alive, no money changes hands.
I mean no money goes to the parents, only to the daughter...
