Pattaya suicide capital of the world?

Is there another town that has a higher rate of suicide.
    Where in the world?

I'm not sure what the rate is in Pattaya, will have to do some digging.

Japan has attained a reputation as the suicide capital of the world. A 2007 international comparison of suicide rates (per 100,000 people) by the World Health Organization ranked Japan sixth for
females, at 12.8, behind Sri Lanka, South Korea and Lithuania, and 11th for males, at 35.6, well below Lithuania, Belarus and the Russian Federation. Although total suicides actually dropped slightly last year, entrenched cultural mores, the pressures inherent to a modern economy and alarming rates of youth depression are likely to continue driving tens of thousands of citizens to self-destruct every year.

    The Japan Times

I saw another report that said Bangalore was just as bad. It seems everyone want the title " Suicide Capital of the world"

It might well be the 'get pissed and wipe yourself out in a motosai or car' capital of the world.

waaay off. Here are the suicide rates by country, and Lithuania is a long way ahead.

I can't help to think that many who come here are on a death wish even before they get onto the plane in their home country.

Know thousands of others that work and toil all year round and to save enough so as they can have their annual 4 weeks in Sin City. Some repeat visitore over more than 20 years.

At the end of the day if you have been pissed up for 3 weeks on the trot, drugged up to the hilt, just been done over by a slapper for most of your remaining cash and the best prospects is to go back to your homeland (which you hate anyway) what other options does these poor souls have.

Does the OP have any figures to back up his claim, just say number of visitors versus suicide rate. As a resident of this town it would be interesting to know the cold hard facts.

What the police decide as a suicide in Pattaya (such as people tying themselves up and shooting themselves 10 times in the head then jumping off a high rise) and what are actual suicides are probably 2 totally different figures, with the first being quite high and the second being quite low.

Indeed. You do get the feeling that suicide is not always voluntary in pattaya (or indeed even thailand as a whole)

^I believe the relevant term to be 'suicided'...

I'd wager Japanese/Indian city prob has a way higher rate. As stated previously - lot of these suicides in Patters are assisted.

I would say, after the number of people that come and go from Pattaya, the suicide rate (among foreigners) is probably low or average.

    Just a hunch.

As for local Thai suicide rates, as stated above, Japan has got to be up on the list for cultural reasons and attitude towards suicide.

Agree that with the numbers that come and go (nae pun intended) the numbers of suicides would be pretty low but there does seem to be quite a few expats, assisted or otherwise, leaving the Pattaya in a box
