    Who do you socialise with?

In answer to Marmite's "Are you like this in real life?" question.

In the UK I was a regular in a football team, cricket team, and pool team, with many great, reliable friends. In Thailand, I have just 4 farang friends (they were selected from the many many farangs I have met here, and 3 of them are a bit weird, and fairly unreliable). The rest of my friends are Thai, of which there are around 10 (only 2 men)

One of the main things I don't like about living in Thailand is the other farangs here, especially around Sukhumvit. (this links back to my strong dislike of the TEFL industry, which is responsible for allowing many of these misfit West-hating ex-fork lift truck drivers to live here and work in my profession, as "teachers")

I think most farangs living in Thailand are as normal, pleasant, and representative of typical worldwide farangs as bar girls are normal, pleasant, and representative of Typical Thais. Both the farangs and bar girls here probably think that they are completely normal and living a great life, but I don't see it that way at all.

2 Architects, a handful of 'teachers', a rugby team full of people from all walks of life and a cricket team with a good mix of folks too. Computer professionals, a builder and a Thai engineer.

No wierdos though, I'm a bit parcticular in who I socialise with.

Like I said. And I think most of the world would agree with me.

That smiley you used reminds me of a muslim women doing that yelling thing with their tongue sticking out. Sort of a wailing thing.

You're talking about one road, Thailand is a big country.

Guess what? If you're looking for normal, no whoring, non-tefl farangs, you're looking in the wrong place.

Living as an expat in South East Asia usually means that people tend to be arriving or going.

I have a couple of good mates here, and one will be leaving soon.

I enjoy the company of others, who are good folks, honest, like having a good time, etc.,

I don't pay attention to to many people and I don't make much of an effort to make friends as people come and go. I have a ton of acqaintances.

I can be social when I want to, and do my own thing when I want to.

    Works well both ways.

socialize with some folks, similar to the folks I socialized with back n the States. Couple dudes in education, mostly other expat business owners. no bar owners... Knew there was something missin' from my social circle.
Folks that are miserable here tend to put me off, most'd be miserable anywhere. Tend to avoid 'em.

Fair enough start to a thread and certainly of interest worthy of comment/addition....

    ...completely undone by this...

    You are an idiot.

In regard to the initial part...

Only just moved to Bangkok but imagine I will socilaise a bit with the football team I play for...like marmers football and cricket clubs, from all walks of life and generally a good bunch.

In Lopburi...socialised mainly with work colleagues and other TEFlers there...selectively. Perhaps fortunately, and in some contrast to Smeg's comments, there have been a good bunch of well-educated, financially comfortable, non-loser TEFLers to balance the less savoury sort of TEFLer, who were easily ignored. Tended to spend a fair few weekends in Bangkok anyway, largely socialising with my football club when there.

Also socialised with a fair number of Thais in Lopburi, although mostly through my wife's involvement in Rotary. As the only farang in a local Thai Rotary chapter, she was spoiled a bit and we had some good experiences and met some good Thais as a consequence.

Milkman is right. Thailand is so transient. I had some good friends working here last year, but most people seem to leave after a year or so. Its tiring having to constantly replace friends, and I need a shit filter to find them.

If I talk to someone in a bar, they are usually a tourist here for a week. Not much point getting pally with them...

Never picked up long term friends or lovers in a bar, here or back in the states. Most barflys bore the fucking shit out of me. If I go to a bar it's for a cool one on a hot day or I go with friends for socializing but just sitting in bar and strike on conversation with someone? It just a shit-shootin' session to kill a few minutes while I cool off. Exchange business cards, file the fuckers and never call again.
