Do internet cafe's breed Thailands losers?

I am of course not talking about the nice, mint clean ones in tourist areas that have flat screens, clean toilets and comfortable chairs - I'm talking about the other ones that smell farty and musty, only open when they feel like it and are packed full of useless, un-motivated, ambitionless, fat, spotty young zombie teenagers all playing Special Force or whatever it is - they're all at it, shooting each other up in a virtual world outside of the real world which to them consists of masturbation and going to other internet cafes when the owner of their regular one is asleep and can't be arsed to open up.

I'm not online at home like most of you fortuanate buggers and I have to endure these places on a regular basis - sometimes visiting 3 or 4 before I can find one that can load a web page in less than five minutes.

Most of them are full of mosquitoes, have big vinyl chairs that either spring to an uncomfortable right angle position or recline so much you can't reach the keyboard, and leave your arse damp with sweat and provide service with as much enthusiasm as the tuk-tuk drivers and cleaners of tomorrow who spend every waking moment playing their mind numbing silly games.

I have been reluctant to get online because here in MTT the phone lines are also dreadful - this because all the phone companies are giving away so many promotions that the lines are getting clogged and a conversation to a guy in the block next door turns into a metallic screech and cuts out like their down a well in Albania.

I want internet in my room and I want the fastest and the best their is and I don't care how expensive it is, I have had enough of keyboards with no letters on them, messenger that never finishes loading and pop up boxes asking me if I want Windoze to remember this password or turn Auto-Complete on or view pages over a secure connection.

Didn't the government have some kind of 'internet cafe' curfew and make the places shut down at 10pm once?... Even shut down the Thai servers of the most popular online games that the kids were addicted to...

Think the result was that crime went up so they let all the yoofs back online again....

Get sorted at home - you can't lower yourself to sitting in these places...

how many open access point are with in range of your room ? have you looked ?

I have seen 2 new access points in my moobarn in the last 3 months - neither of them secured.

I agree with the OP and have been relegated to these awful places from time to time by virtue of failed internet connections. This is the case today since it appears my apartment manager has once again failed to pay True. He forgot to pay the electric and the cable TV last month.

Anyway it has occurred to me that these childern are all dooming themselves to lives of failure and poverty. The years when I was learning stuff and studying for exams, these fools are spending playing meaningless games. There is a small positive aspect in that they will all be computer literate. They all know how a computer functions, how to downloas stuff, use email etc. However that is Computing 101 and without any other knowledge it is pretty useless.

No role models I'm afraid. These kids don't know anyone who has made a success of their lives and when they see someone with a decent car or house they consider that person to be "lucky" since they have no comprehension of the study and work that went in to obtaining those things.

So they buy lottery tickts and play online games in the hope they will get lucky too.

It's depressing.

Probably because, IME in LoS, most of those driving those cars and living in those houses didn't do fuck all to earn it/them, including having to do a bit of study. Would agree some have, but equally as many (if not more) that just asked Mummy for help.

On a different note, when I first went to Thailand [1990] you would rarely, if ever, see a fat kid. If you did see one, there was usually a bloody good reason for it. By the time I left [2007] you'd be luck to go a day without seeing a fat kid. Times have certainly changed.

Just look at the number of hawker stalls outside schools at closing time .

Next - try and find a kid after school - either in a songtaw , on the back of a motorbike or waiting to be picked up from school , who isnt eating or drinking some violently coloured drink or a lump of fried crap !!!
