To Gik or not To Gik

I assume that most people and if not everybody understands the meaning of gik in Thai.

If you have a lady you love and are, or are not married, how acceptable do you think it would be to have one? What are the burdens, financial, moral, time consumption.

How many at one time?

yeah i usually have one of those. i think its ok but it gets expensive. keeps my mind active thinking of excuses and planning rendezvous, finding legitimate excuses to take money from our joint account etc

^SFB, not strictly speaking a mistress. A gik may not be someone with whom you are having sexual relations, but is someone who is more than just a freind

There's another stage on the development ladder between gik and mia noi, which I believe you write as g-a-r. A g-a-r is someone you are having sexual relations with, but they haven't been promoted to mia noi status just yet.

With no offense intended to the OP, Gik is derived more from a term used to describe "puppy love" among tennagers who are not actively sexual yet but who become possesive over each other and where they are not considered their fan (i.e. boyfriend/girlfriend).

So you have a 14 year old boy who has a steady girlfriend, she's his fan, but he is also buying sodas for the cheerleader, she's his gik

strangely, the reason I would not like to admit a gik relationship is that it infers more than a mere sexual relationship in that it also infers some possessive right/nature. A mia noi, on the other hand, would not necessarily think such a possive relationship exists.

My misses is'nt overly possesive. If she found out for instance that I'd been out one night and gone with a girl for a bar she'd be a bit pissed of but mainly because in her eyes I did'nt think enough about her to be more discret.

A mia noi or gik on the other hand she'd go up the wall. To be honest I can't see why people bother. If you want sex just go and pay for it and forget it why go through the hastle of trying to maintain another relationship.

Have to say though that it was once told to be that gik is rarely sexual. Apparently, if sex was involved she was upgraded to a gar (or something like that). But I still wasn't interested

I'd go with stroll's (mabye it's a country thing) although I would'nt argue with any of the definitions. As it is a fairly modern slang term the definition probaly changes depending on you location and social circle
