At times we hear the cacophony and conundrum of our bad, incompetent, or bitchy or bitchy boss(es).

The Peter Principle seems to be in effect in a-many of places.

Well here, is the place for you to tell us about a great boss you had. (If you've had one.) Yes, some of us here are self-employed, but most folks are not, nor have forever been on their own.

Tell us about the best boss you've had.

My Kiwi boss use to make up excuse's for me to leave the rig and go into town so we could go motorcycle riding for a couple of days . He is no longer my boss but is still a good mate.

Didn't like most of them 'cos they always seemed to be trying to stop me doing what I wanted to do, or were intent on taking the credit for what I had done that was good.......

There was one though. His name was Dr Robert Reid. He was the head of
BBC Science and Features dept.

Sadly, he commited suicide when his wife left him for his best friend.
Stuck a hosepipe in his car exhaust and gassed himself.......To this day the memory of it makes me very sad.

There were others whom I got on with. But Bob was the best. RIP Bob.

The best boss I ever had was William Ainsworth. He was a Brit that married an Irish girl from Chicago.

I live next to his business in Chicago and was an out of work high school kid at the time. I was walking on the foot path and he said "Hey kid, do you want a job?", and I started that day.

William knew so much about the world, business, women and how to enjoy life. He was a very rich man. He inspired me to be a business man, enjoy life and enjoy women. He was 55 when he hired me, and he had 5 or 6 girlfriends between the ages of 19 and 30!!!! He was married to a 40 year old gal that was a former model. She never caught him in one of his flings.
I remember being underneath his 1958 Chevy Impala trying to fix it. I was handing him tools and he was doing the work. Will stopped and looked at me and began to cry. He said that his dad had ran off and he never knew him. He told me he loved me like I was his own son (He had only daughters) and asked me to call him dad. I did from the that day until his death.

I ended up buying his business (for a fraction of what it was worth) because his daughters wanted no part of it. He let me make monthly payments and never cared if I was short.

As long as I lived in Chicago, we always had breakfast together at the Bryn Mawr Cafe. The cook altered the menu for him and made him baked beans with his eggs and toast!

When he died, he left me several guns, the titles to 2 antique cars and he wrote off the rest of the debt that I owed him on the business and building I had bought.

I felt a great loss when "dad" died and will always miss him.

This thread may have just a few posts, but it was a great thread for me. It brought back a lot of great memories of William Ainsworth.......

Best boss?

Brian the Milkman (pretty ironic considering the OP).

I used to have a milkround when I was 11 years old. Brian was the milkman. I remember laughing from the time I arrived at the depot at 05:00 am until we got back at 03:00 pm. He had me in stitches all day.
All the old biddies loved him and we had at least three stops for tea and biscuits whilst the old ladies would make a fuss over Brian and me.
There was one stop where I wasn't invited in and she wasn't old. Brian would always buy me a big bag of chips to munch whilst I waited twenty or thirty minutes in the milk float.

Bout the best boss I ever had.

The boss I had for maybe 20 yrs or so, an Ozzie, we shared a passion for yacht racing and he and I owned a couple of offshore race yachts together, great guy, very intelligent man but had no idea when to keep his mouth shut and for that reason customers disliked him.

In the end the company shafted him but he retired and went into his hobby fulltime designing yachts.
Did well and designed the (2003?) Sydney to Hobart winner, Wild Thing. He probably makes more money now than he did as Managing Director.

My best boss was the bloke who first hired me as a stockbroker in late 1984, Larry. He was American but had been to Sydney, fell in love with the place and decided to emigrate. Plus shake up the staid old Australian stockbroking industry- he was previously a branch manager in LA for Dean Witter. He'd led a pretty varied life though, at one stage he used to own a bar in NY city, he had also changed his name which of course led to all sorts of gossip about dark secrets in his past amongst the stockbroking 'old guard', who were about to be shaken up by the impending deregulation of the industry. The eight people he hired soon became known as Larrys Raiders- we were neither the sons of stockbrokers nor people who had spent years learning the ropes in the back office of a stockbroker. There was a fair bit of suspicion and resentment- Aussies, bless 'em, can be a very parochial, back biting bunch. Needless to say, we prevailed- of the eight, four would be considered outright success stories, three have done OK, one a sleaze who got dumped.

He's retired now, and looks great for his age. We're still friends, but only catch up every few years. He quit and joined Merrill Lynch after a couple of years, three of us followed him there in the next few months.

Anyway, he puts me as his number 2 best staff so fair enough.
