I ran away.
At the time there was a temporary block on extradition from England to Thailand and now it's back I just hope I don't get pulled over for speeding.
I ran away with Switch.
Actually I was dating a Chiang Mai bird in Sydney that was there studying around 2001, we came to CM for a 3 week holiday, did lots of motorbiking etc etc, her father was a really good judge of character as he told her to fok me right off.
I was walking around Meadowhell looking for a pair of sunglasses.
Went past Thomas Cook advertising board outside shop, Bangkok flying BA ,6 nights Landmark Hotel £159. I thought sunglasses £120 Bangkok £159 so I purchased both items.
Company I worked for in Aus sent me here on a 3 month stint to set up a new manufacturing facility.
Forgot to go home.
...retirement was either here or Costa Rica/Panama...still not sure I made the right choice...
^^ Also my other options. If located there would be closer to family in the US. Also have friends in Costa Rica.
I love Chiang Mai. People are nice. My friends are here. Air pollution is THE only drawback. Well, take that back, driving here is no treat but certainly worse in other areas of Thailand.
^^^ Another option. I could go live in Japan. I currently have two houses, but yuck.
No music option, the rest is rubbish
I will answer for the last 20years. Great outdoor life for me, I love a Thai roadtrip and there is always plenty to see and some pretty dam interesting people to meet.
First time was kind of on a whim. Had a chance in college to go abroad for some volunteer work in Asia (i had never been overseas). I chose Thailand because i was doing some thaiboxing and knew a couple thai folks and a had a Lao girl i was sweet on who had lived in thailand for a bit and visited a few times and said it was really cool place. So.. picked Thailand for a 6 mo post and ended up staying 2 years. Now 30 years later its about people... my closest and dearest friends are my Thai friends i have kept close relationships with for the past 30 years. I want to be nearer to them as I grow old. Cost of living and good food is a bonus for sure and factors in.
for me it is that no other country has a many Michelin starred food stalls
Graduated in an economic crash, so decided to teach English for a term or two. Ended up staying and going to Myanmar and Mongolia.
