    Now would be a good time to stock up on Olive Oil

    Olive oil price skyrockets as Spanish drought bites

    In Spain, olive oil prices have increased by more than 70% this year alone after a sharp rise in 2022. A one-litre bottle of extra virgin oil currently costs around €9 ($9.88; £7.79) in low-budget supermarkets. A slight drop in the market price in recent weeks is only providing light relief.

    <snip>

    Spain is the world's biggest olive oil producer, covering 70% of European Union consumption and 45% of that of the entire world.

    actually Xylella fastidiosa is more a concern and has been for over 10 years now

    Deadly olive tree disease across Europe 'could cost billions'

    Researchers say the economic costs of a deadly pathogen affecting olive trees in Europe could run to over €20 billion.

    They've modelled the future worst impacts of the Xylella fastidiosa pathogen which has killed swathes of trees in Italy.

    Spread by insects, the bacterium now poses a potential threat to olive plantations in Spain and Greece.

    The disease could increase the costs of olive oil for consumers.

    Xylella is considered to be one of the most dangerous pathogens for plants anywhere in the world. At present there is no cure for the infection.

    It can infect cherry, almond and plum trees as well as olives.

    It has become closely associated with olives after a strain was discovered in trees in Puglia in Italy in 2013.

    The organism is transmitted by sap-sucking insects such as spittlebugs.

    The infection limits the tree's ability to move water and nutrients and over time it withers and dies.

    68,000 gallons of fake, inedible ‘olive oil’ seized in Spain, cops say. 11 arrested

    Law enforcement agents in Italy and Spain investigated efforts to make counterfeit and inedible olive oil, leading to the seizure of over 68,000 gallons of contaminated oil and 11 arrests, officials said. Schemes to make fake extra virgin olive oil are “a common practice,” according to a Dec. 4 news release from Europol, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation. Police described these schemes as “illegal” and able to pose “a public health risk.” Italian and Spanish police investigated one such scheme in which extra virgin olive oil was diluted with lampante oil, the release said. Named after its use as fuel for oil lamps, lampante oil is described as a “lower-quality variant of olive oil” with higher acidity, a “distinctly unpleasant” smell and “undesirable flavor.”
