    Music

There was a tranny under the sheets at nigh to listen to the only modern music on Radio Lux and later the Pirates , London, Atlantic and of course CAROLINE, WHERE MANY FAMOUS DJs paid theor dues, I later had the pleasure to meet Johnnie Walker

Small portable generally HK or Jap transistors were crackly lightweight but cheap and with an earpiece changed the world.
    Do do do you remember?-tr-jpg

Cost barely a fiver, I later had stylish Bush but the Roberts was the best

Then came the Radiogram my parents had disguised as furniture, like this monster, low fidelity but Scandi box was the norm.
    Do do do you remember?-download-jpg
In my room I had like almost every teenage a Dansette (theoretically portable 6kg record player with a stacker so could load up 6 x 45rpm singles or eps

    Mine looked just like this
    Do do do you remember?-images-jpg

As young adult separate units came in and I built huge KEF speakers and a Goodmans /Tosh/Technics with diamond styli you had to change deck that would shake me and the neighbours on full blast

Then cassettes in the car and mini disc CD and of course soon all digital

At some point a guy walked into Sony chief and said boss I've invented a tape recorder that doesn't record

The SONY walkman and billions of cheap clones allowed portable music beforeIiPods and cell phones Deezer or Spotifty were thought of

I was in multi cultural London well there were the English a few Celts and handful of others, food was as bad as Ireland outside 5 star unaffordable French restos until the curry houses spread with their late lager and burning Vindaloos to every town and village, an era before delivered Pizza or Tikka Masala , Baltis and Nans were heard of in Blighty.

In 70s I visited Irish Polish Russian Persian and Danish places with dad Thai and Vietnamese was unknown and suburbs had greasy Chinese or Fish Chip Burger take aways.
The only options for a date with a tablecloth and waiter were Chinese or Indian having lived in China and India the food bore no similarity and was either Sweet Sour missing cat with crispy noodles plus 6 lagers or Burning hot Cat/dog/horse curry with 5 lagers. The menus just said meat and teh Sylheti waiters dare not admit the source,

Slim pickings and fry up in a greasy spoon/Fred"s cafe deals was usually better, pub lunches were basic pickled egg and scotch egg medley until some marketing guru invented the Ploughman's, Carveries and the microwave layers of lasagne and endless chicken in the basket

Haut Cuisine blighty style where sardines on toast were sold in public!!!

A quirk of mine in the early 70s when it was cool to smoke. Sadly F&T closed in the 80s.

Fighter jet gummies. The stealth bomber was special and not available in every pack. The Mig 27 was included too.

    Good times!

We broke into a remote signal hut on a railway and found loads of giant caps that were placed on the tracks to warn railway workers that a train was coming.

Needless to say we lined them all up on the track under a bridge for cover and hid.

The sound of those percussion caps going off still rings in my ears to this very day.

It was in the 1970's that the dog/cat rescue centres put a ban on Asians adopting then later a price that made it economically unviable for them to fill a van with strays and head back to their takeaway for a mass slaughter.

My relationship with peas started young...

We used to prowl around the estate with a pea shooter in one hand and a box of dried peas in the other. Dark winter evenings were best because no-one closed their curtains... the look of shock when a salvo of peas hit the window!

It was all burning cow dung pies and knock and run up north.

Nothing more satisfying than a miserable old Dodger stamping out the flames on his door step only to walk a shoe full off dung onto his axminster carpet.

I had this TV control watch when I was 12 years old:

    Do do do you remember?-screen-shot-2023-02-15-08-a

You had to type in a different code to control each TV manufacturer so had to carry around the wee booklet to get the right codes.

I used to spy in the living room windows on my morning paper rounds to see what TV brands each visible tv had, as long as they left it on standby.

After about a week I'd sussed out about 30 TVs and used to switch them all on during my rounds. This went on for about a week before people started talking about this weird phenomenon so I knocked it on the head before they sussed me out.

I got kicked out of a few shopping centers too for turning up the volume on the display TVs in the window.

Got a detention for rewinding the bit where the woman gets starkers on Living & Growing videos over and over again.

Night times I used to creep up to people's windows and switch their TVs off.

My dad got a beater 69 chev that he got for parts for its chopped and tubed one. It had an inline 6 3 on the tree. I wanted to see what it was like but the linkage was fuct up. We chopped a hole in the cab and had 2 levers instead. So I still cant say I've ever driven a 3 on the tree

^^I learned to drive in a 3 on the tree on a large property aged about 12. It wasn't just steering and brakes that had to be learned it was also a clutch and manual gearbox that didn't have syncro back to first, so double-declutching had to be mastered at the same time. A lot different to the cars of today that's for sure, an untrained chimp could jump in one and drive off smoothly on their first ever attempt these days.
